Jan 17 - 7:50 AM

Tampa Bay is excited at the potential of 6-foot-8 blueliner Andrej Sustr.

"He's going to be growing into himself. We get him a year or two in the weight room and really working on his core strengths, and when he starts physically to mature, you're going to see the kid jump leaps and bounds," coach Jon Cooper said. "But that doesn't take away from how heady a player he is, how smart he is, being in the right positions. He is not afraid to try to make a play even if it costs him a mistake, because we're encouraging that. All those aspects of his game are there. It's just his physical strength needs to be better." Sustr has contributed four of his six assists this season in his last four games. He also has a plus-5 rating. However, he doesn't get the hit and block totals that one would typically associate with a player of his build. He's better off left on the waiver wire until we get a better idea of what kind of player he's going to become.

Andrej Sustr posted the first multi-point game of his career in Saturday's loss at Phoenix.

He collected two assists in Tampa Bay's 6-3 defeat. "When he starts physically to mature you are going to see this kid jump leaps and bounds, but that doesn't take away from how heady of a player he is, how smart he is being in the right positions," coach Jon Cooper said of the 6-foot-8, 220-pound defender. Sustr has skated in 15 of the Bolts' 20 games this season and as of right now, he's not worth a spot on your fantasy roster.

Andrej Sustr and Pierre-Cedric Labrie are believed to play for the Tampa Bay Lightning against the Florida Panthers on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Keith Aulie and Mark Barberio are expected to watch as healthy scratches. These aren't tweaks that should have a major fantasy impact.

Andrej Sustr and Mark Barberio have made Tampa Bay's roster to start the season.

The team kept eight defenseman, excluding injured defenders Brian Lee and Mattias Ohlund. Sustr looked good at training camp and earned himself a spot as a result. "He skated well, had good hockey sense, good skill," GM Steve Yzerman said of the 6-foot-8, 225-pound defender, "and he adapted well."

Andrej Sustr, a 6'8" 22-year-old defenseman, has been very impressive in Tampa's training camp.

The Zdeno Chara-like rearguard had a strong season in the AHL last year and has been solid in pre-season games to date. "You can just see he has grown," Lightning coach Jon Cooper said. "Poise, poise under pressure, it looks like the game has slowed down for him a little bit, so he's making some savvy plays out there. And he has confidence, and you need to play in games to get that confidence. You can sit there and do all the talking you want, but until you are put in the fire you don't really know how hot it is. I think Sustr has grown, and that's a good sign with the limited number of games he has played." Sustr has some offensive upside and will be a PIM per game player in the NHL, should he make it.

AHL Syracuse GM and Tampa Bay assistant GM Julien BriseBois praised the play of Andrej Sustr during the Calder Cup playoffs.

"He played really well," BriseBois said. "He contributed and played in all situations. I thought in the playoffs when the pressure started to mount and we were down three games to nothing, our margin for error was very slim. He didn't wilt under the pressure. He kept being assertive on the ice with and without the puck which I thought was a really good sign." Sustr generated two goals, seven points, 25 penalty minutes and a plus-11 rating in 18 games during the AHL postseason. He dressed in two NHL contests with the Lightning this past campaign after signing with the team in March out of the University of Nebraska-Omaha. The towering defenseman may not have much in the way of fantasy value, but he could develop into a solid stay-at-home player at the NHL level.
