Tobias Rieder and the Arizona Coyotes were shut out by the Los Angeles Kings by a score of 1-0 on Monday night.

Rieder finished the game with a minus-1 rating, but he finished the night with three shots and four hits in 22:15 of ice time. The 22-year-old has shown some flashes in his rookie season. It's difficult to get a read on how good Rieder will be because of the lack of talent on Arizona's roster this season. He has 11 goals and 18 points in 59 games, but he could easily improve on those numbers if the Coyotes add some more offensive talent next season.

Tobias Rieder admitted that his assignment to the Coyotes' top line in his NHL debut caught him by surprise.

"I couldn't believe it at first," Rieder said. "I thought it was a mistake. I checked my number again." Rieder played alongside Shane Doan and Antoine Vermette and made the most of that assignment. He recorded a plus-two rating, three shots on goal, and netted the game-winning goal in his first NHL contest. Rieder's golden opportunity was likely in recognition of his great performance during training camp. Although he ultimately fell short of making the team's opening game roster, he made a strong impression on Coyotes coach Dave Tippett and that's paying off now.

It was the NHL debut for Rieder who was drafted in the fourth round of the 2011 draft by Edmonton before being traded to the Coyotes in March of 2013. "It was tough going to bed (Saturday) night I'm not going to lie," Rieder said. "I think I haven't really realized it. This is a dream come true." Congratulations to Rieder on his successful NHL debut.
