Tobias Rieder scored two shorthanded goals in Arizona's 5-2 win over Edmonton.
Scoring two shorthanded goals in a game is rare enough, but both of Rieder's goals came just 58 seconds apart. Interestingly enough, Rieder was originally drafted by Edmonton in 2011, but he was traded to Arizona last March. The 21-year-old has four goals, seven points and is a plus-7 in 15 games this year. Tobias Rieder admitted that his assignment to the Coyotes' top line in his NHL debut caught him by surprise.

"I couldn't believe it at first," Rieder said. "I thought it was a mistake. I checked my number again." Rieder played alongside Shane Doan and Antoine Vermette and made the most of that assignment. He recorded a plus-two rating, three shots on goal, and netted the game-winning goal in his first NHL contest. Rieder's golden opportunity was likely in recognition of his great performance during training camp. Although he ultimately fell short of making the team's opening game roster, he made a strong impression on Coyotes coach Dave Tippett and that's paying off now.

He played 11:30 minutes and played on the top line with Shane Doan and Antoine Vermette as he was a plus-two in the game. It was the NHL debut for Rieder who was drafted in the fourth round of the 2011 draft by Edmonton before being traded to the Coyotes in March of 2013. "It was tough going to bed (Saturday) night I'm not going to lie," Rieder said. "I think I haven't really realized it. This is a dream come true." Congratulations to Rieder on his successful NHL debut.

Tobias Rieder is looking for a spot with the Arizona Coyotes this season.

The Coyotes have 20 players on one-way contracts so there are still three spots remaining assuming all 20 make it. Rieder was selected in the fourth round of the 2011 Draft by Edmonton and the German-born winger was dealt to the Coyotes in 2013 for Kale Kessy. Rieder had 28 goals and 48 points and may be better served by spending more time in the minors.
