Todd Marchant has decided to hang up his skates and retire.
The 37-year-old forward enjoyed 17 seasons in the NHL and he captured the Stanley Cup with the Anaheim Ducks in 2007. Marchant registered 186 goals and 312 assists in 1,195 games with the New York Rangers, Edmonton, Columbus and Anaheim. "I'd like to personally thank Todd for his invaluable contributions to this organization over the last six years," said GM Bob Murray. "His character and presence in our locker room will be missed, but we're extremely grateful that he has agreed to join the front office as director of player development. Congratulations to Todd and his family on a wonderful career." We would also like to wish Marchant the best of luck in his new role in the front office of the Ducks. Wed, Jun 29, 2011 05:23:00 PM

Date:

Todd Marchant is unsure of his future as he is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1.

The 17 year veteran is a fourth liner at best at this stage of his career who does not score as his eight points in 79 games this season will attest to. "You want to be a player on a team that has a role and can fill a spot," Marchant said. "I felt on this team this year that obviously penalty killing was a big part of my role on this team. Moving forward, that would have to be something that I would have to continue to do." A team like the Toronto Maple Leafs, who were so poor in shorthanded situations, could be interested, as they could also use veteran leadership, and it would be close to Marchant's hometown of Buffalo.

Todd Marchant sat out practice on Thursday with flu-like symptoms.

The 37-year-old will likely be a game-time decision on Friday against the Ducks cross-town rival Los Angeles Kings. "Marchant was feeling ill after the game," coach Randy Carlyle said. "He was running a fever. Had the aches and pains. So it looks like he has a case of the flu. We just felt with him, [his] birth ceritificate and what was happening and the number of minutes he played and the draining schedule that we've been underneath, it's best that he sits at home and has a rest." Marchant has no fantasy value.

Todd Marchant scored his first goal since May 17th, 2010 on Sunday.

Marchant went 70 games without a goal. "I don't know what my longest drought was prior to this. It certainly wasn't anywhere near this, but I didn't let it get me down mentally," Marchant said. "I knew that I have many other roles here. I mean, if this team was counting on me scoring goals, we wouldn't be going very far." Marchant obviously doesn't have any fantasy value.

The Anaheim Ducks have given up only one power play goal in their last nine games.

The Ducks have won eight of their last ten games and penalty killing has been a major reason why as they have been without captain Ryan Getzlaf for most of the time as he was injured in the second period ten games ago. Todd Marchant leads the Ducks in time on ice during shorthanded situations with defenseman Toni Lydman close behind. "Special teams are always a factor," Ducks coach Randy Carlyle said. "Positively and negatively. And that's a huge, huge undertaking if you can get your penalty killing to give you a chance in games. Where maybe the territorial advantage hasn't been in your favor and what not. You're taking penalties because you're playing in the defensive zone too much and when the penatly killers go out and nullify the opposition's power play, it gives you a lift. Gives you a boost." Marchant has no fantasy value with only five assists and a minus-12 rating in 48 games.

Thirty-seven year-old Todd Marchant is centering the third line with 19-year-old Kyle Palmieri and 22-year-old Nick Bonino.

Palmieri has played one NHL game, while Bonino now has played 10 games. The veteran Marchant has played 1,129 matches in the bigs and has lots of things to tell the youngsters. "There's a lot of questions," Marchant said. "I was a young player at one time, too. I remember the guys that I played with and how they helped me out. I just told them, 'If you have any questions – I don't care what it is – just bounce it off me. I've probably seen it a couple of times." The Ducks are bringing Palmieri along quickly and Marchant could be the best player to team him with at this time.
