It seems like Nate Schmidt will be picked in the expansion draft by Vegas.

The Golden Knights didn't select backup goalie Philipp Grubauer, so it's likely that Schmidt will be lost to the Capitals. If that is the case then Vegas will be getting a talented puck-moving defender for their defense corps.

Nate Schmidt has reportedly been exposed in the upcoming expansion draft by the Washington Capitals.

The Capitals protected three defensemen, according to Isabelle Khurshudyan of the Washington Post. The three players are John Carlson, Matt Niskanen and Dmitry Orlov. This doesn't necessarily mean the Capitals will lose Schmidt, but they'll likely have to make a side deal with the Golden Knights to keep him around. It should be interesting.

Nate Schmidt is expected to step into a top-four spot on Washington's defense corps next campaign.

He played well alongside John Carlson during the playoffs and it looks like the Capitals will allow Karl Alzner and Kevin Shattenkirk to test free agency. Schmidt's mobility and puck-moving skills make him a perfect fit for the NHL. In 60 games this past season, he posted 17 points.

Washington will probably try to protect Nate Schmidt from being snatched up in the expansion draft.

The smooth-skating defender would be an attractive player for the Vegas Golden Knights. "Obviously, there's a possibility," Schmidt said. "It seems like everything that they're doing is getting the right people. I talked to a couple guys who played for [Coach Gerard] Gallant and liked him. ... With how deep the league is, there's going to be a lot of good players. There are going to be good players that are going to be exposed on every team." The Capitals may try to work out a deal with Vegas to keep him on the roster.

Nate Schmidt scored a goal in Wednesday's 3-2 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The Caps were down 2-0 in the second period, but goals by Evgeny Kuznetsov and Schmidt allowed them to level the score. Less than three minutes after Schmidt tied the game at two, the Penguins regained the lead on a goal by defenseman Justin Schultz. The Capitals are now down 3-1 in the best-of-seven series. A loss in Game 5 would eliminate them from the postseason. Schmidt will head into Saturday's game with one goal and two assists in eight postseason games.
May 3 - 11:07 PM

Nate Schmidt will remain in the Capitals' lineup for Game 1 on Thursday.

Schmidt was inserted into the lineup because Karl Alzner has been out with an upper-body injury. Alzner isn't ready to return in Game 1, but Schmidt has been doing well enough that he might stay in the lineup even after Alzner returns.
Apr 27 - 12:16 PM

If Karl Alzner is ready to return for Game 1 on Thursday, Nate Schmidt might be a healthy scratch.

Schmidt has done well though, leading to speculation that the Capitals might scratch a different defenseman or even dress seven blueliners. Capitals coach Barry Trotz said that Schmidt has put him in a tough position. "He’s come in and he’s done a really good job," Trotz added. "He’s such a good skater. We played a quick team and he fit in just perfectly with us. I thought he was making a statement, ‘Hey I'm gonna make it tough to take me out of the lineup."

He was paired with John Carlson during the morning skate and will get the nod to make his series debut if Karl Alzner isn't available. The iron-man defender is listed as a game-time decision after he missed the morning skate for maintenance.
