It's not clear if Nate Schmidt will be healthy enough to participate in the start of training camp.

Schmidt missed a street hockey clinic in mid-August due to an ankle injury. At the time Golden Knights GM George McPhee said Schmidt would be re-evaluated in about a week, but the team recently said that there's "there is no update" on his injury status. Don't read too much into it yet, but it's something that will be worth checking in on once the camp begins.

Nate Schmidt didn't mind going through the arbitration process with the Vegas Golden Knights.

Of all the players that filed for arbitration, Schmidt was the only one who actually went through the process. He ended up landing a two-year deal, $2.225 million per season, so it's easy to see why he was pleased with how things worked out. "I tried to have a good attitude about it, it’s something they had never been through before some people maybe wanted to have some experience as well," said Schmidt. "I think it’s a great process because it brings the sides together because no one really wants to do it, but you know what I think it was good the way everything played out."

Nate Schmidt may be the only player to go through salary arbitration this off-season.

Schmidt's hearing is scheduled for Thursday. The two sides can still settle on their own terms until the arbitrator's ruling comes within 48 hours. There have been positive negotiations between Schmidt's agent, Matt Keator, and the Golden Knights. However, their salary requests were very different. The former Capitals defender asked for 2.75 million for the 2017-18 season, while Vegas requested a two-year award for Schmidt at $950,000 and $1 million.

I talked to George [McPhee] last week and there's no rush. There's still time." Schmidt earned $875,000 last season as a member of the Washington Capitals.
