Detroit has placed Jared Coreau on waivers.
Coreau has performed very well in the AHL with Grand Rapids over the last three seasons. He also appeared in 14 games with Detroit in 2016-17, but he is the third netminder on the depth chart behind Jimmy Howard and Petr Mrazek. The Red Wings have also waived forwards Ben Street and Matt Lorito as well as defensemen Dylan McIlrath and Brian Lashoff. Oct 1 - 12:24 PM

Jared Coreau will have to clear waivers to be sent down to the minors next season.

Coreau may be assigned to Grand Rapids because Detroit already has Jimmy Howard and Petr Mrazek on the roster. The Red Wings could also carry three goalies at the start of the season. "We're very comfortable with Jared as a third," goaltending coach Jeff Salajko said in early July. "I have no problem with him being the backup goalie, either. If we can keep Jimmy Howard healthy to play 50-55 games, I was comfortable with Jared in a role like that. But we obviously have Petr back - Vegas didn't have interest in him, so I'm hoping he comes in with a chip on his shoulder and something to prove." If Howard has injury issues or Mrazek struggles then Coreau could be an NHL option, but for now he is just a depth netminder.

Jared Coreau has helped guide the Grand Rapids Griffins to a Calder Cup championship.

Coreau posted a 2.84 GAA and .909 save percentage in 19 games during the Griffins' playoff run. He made 29 saves in the Griffins' 4-3 victory against Syracuse in Game 6. "He proved a lot of people wrong," Grand Rapids coach Todd Nelson said. "There were people who said he couldn’t win big games. He won the biggest one tonight." Coreau appeared in 14 games with Detroit in 2016-17, but he struggled in the NHL with a 3.46 GAA and .887 save percentage. He can go into the summer on a great note now though.

Jared Coreau and the Grand Rapids Griffins are one win away from winning the Calder Cup.

"Nellie always talks to me about giving the team a chance to win," Coreau said referring to Griffins coach Todd Nelson. "I think that is just my mind-set going into every game - it’s not so much about thinking I am going to have a good game, it is just believing that I am playing for the crest on the front and the guys in the room." Coreau was signed by the Red Wings after going unselected in the NHL Entry Draft in 2013. He spent two years splitting time between the ECHL and AHL before moving into a full-time AHL role. With injuries to Howard and Mrazek this year, he played in his first 14 career NHL games. However, his numbers weren't great with a 5-4-3 record, a 3.46 goals-against average and an .887 save percentage. Still, if Vegas were to select Howard or Mrazek in the expansion draft, Coreau could find himself in a permanent backup goaltending position next season with Detroit.
Jun 10 - 5:09 PM

Jared Coreau has led the Grand Rapids Griffins to the Calder Cup Final.

Coreau stopped 39 of 41 shots Saturday night as the Griffins put away the San Jose Barracude 4-2 to clinch the AHL's Western Conference Championship. The Griffins will face off against the Syracuse Crunch, who defeated the Providence Bruins in the Eastern final, for the Calder Cup. Coreau has been outstanding in the playoffs so far, as he has not allowed more than two goals in 9 out of 13 games. Coreau stands a good chance of starting the season in Detroit in 2017-18 once the Red Wings sort out who will be the team's starting goalie between Jimmy Howard and Petr Mrazec.

Coreau is in the minors on a conditioning stint. He hadn't played in a game since Feb. 12, so it's normal that there was a bit of rust. Expect Coreau to re-join the Red Wings once their bye week ends on Monday.
