Seth Helgeson was the only RFA New Jersey Devil not to file for salary arbitration on Sunday.

No specific reasoning was given, but it appears safe to presume that both he and the Devils expect to work out a new deal. Last season the 24-year-old defenseman saw his first 22 games of NHL action, scoring just two assists with 18 PIMs and blocks, and 42 hits. He made just $595K with the Devils as well, so a modest raise is about all that can be expected.

Seth Helgeson played on Wednesday despite initially being projected to serve as a healthy scratch.

Damon Severson, who was originally supposed to play, was held out of the contest due to a lower-body injury. It's not known how long Severson will be sidelined for due to the ailment, but apparently it's been bothering him for a while now. This could lead to more consistent opportunities for Helgeson in the short-term.

Devils coach Pete DeBoer liked Seth Helgeson's performance in his NHL debut.

"I liked him in training camp," DeBoer said. "I said I thought he looked like an NHL defenseman in camp and I liked what I saw the first game. He's a physical guy, he's got a long stick, he’s hard to play against and we need some of that." Helgeson is projected to play in his second NHL game on Friday.

"Overall, it was just a special experience for myself and it's nice to be a part of a win." The 24-year-old isn't an offensive defenseman, so don't get too excited over the fact that he got a point in his first game.
