Eric Hartzell has been sent down to AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.
That reduces the Penguins' training camp roster to 43 players. Hartzell has plenty of upside after four great seasons in the NCAA, but he was never expected to make the team's opening game roster. Fri, Sep 20, 2013 10:05:00 AM

The Pittsburgh Penguins signed goalie Eric Hartzell to a two-year, two-way deal on Saturday.

The contract is worth $550K at the NHL level, if he can get there. That's an interesting consideration when you factor in the possibility of regular Marc-Andre Fleury trade rumors. One of Hartzell's biggest assets is his size, as he stands at 6-foot-4.

Pittsburgh GM Ray Shero said the team has "no plans" to play Eric Hartzell this season.

Since he was signed after the NHL trade deadline, he isn't eligible for the Stanley Cup playoffs and he can't play for their AHL affiliate in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton either during the postseason. "He's going to be the third goalie, soak things up and be around the team," Shero said. "Having Eric here will be good for his development." Hartzell was signed by the Penguins last week after he posted a career-year with Quinnipiac University. He's projected to join the team on Wednesday.

Eric Hartzell has inked an entry-level contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

It's a one-year deal that only runs through what's left of the 2012-13 campaign. Hartzell is coming off of a phenomenal season where he posted a 1.57 GAA and .933 save percentage in 42 NCAA games. He was both a Hobey Baker Award finalist and the ECAC Player of the Year. He's worth keeping an eye on in 2013-14, but he's probably still at least a couple years away from having any fantasy value.
