The Colorado Avalanche have assigned Joe Whitney to AHL San Antonio.

The 28-year-old is a career minor leaguer, with just five games of NHL action to his credit despite his near point-per-game averages in the AHL. Which tells you about all you need to know about his fantasy potential.

The New York Islanders have signed Joe Whitney to a one-year, two-way contract.

Whitney had 23 goals, 60 points, and 64 penalty minutes in 66 AHL contests in 2014-15. He might play for the Islanders at some point during the 2015-16 campaign as an injury replacement.

Joe Whitney has been sent to AHL Albany.

It's an opportunity for Whitney to continue to play during the NHL All-Star break. On top of that, he'll participate in the AHL All-Star Game on Monday. He has 14 goals and 33 points in 35 AHL contests in 2014-15.

Joe Whitney will play as fourth line left wing next to Tim Sestito and Jordin Tootoo Friday night in Anaheim.

Whitney, whose 26 years old and has a goal in four career NHL games, has been a steady scoring force for AHL Albany this season. He has 14 goals and 33 points through 35 games, and seems well on pace to eclipse his career highs of 26 goals and 51 points from 2012-13. On second thought, he'd probably prefer to never see Albany again.

Joe Whitney has been called up by the New Jersey Devils.

The Devils wanted an extra forward because Jaromir Jagr and Tuomo Ruutu will both miss Wednesday's contest due to an illness. Whitney might play on the fourth line on Wednesday.

Joe Whitney has been selected as the AHL Player of the Week.

Whitney had two goals and five points in two AHL contests. That gives him 13 goals and 32 points in 32 games in 2014-15. Although he's having a strong season in the minors, the 26-year-old isn't likely to earn anything more than short-term stints with the Devils for the remainder of the season.

Joe Whitney has been sent to the minors.

The Devils will have Martin Havlat, Patrik Elias, and Michael Ryder back in their lineup Friday night and they needed to make some room for their return. Whitney has a goal in two games with New Jersey this season.

Joe Whitney was naturally excited to score his first goal Wednesday.

"I just remember getting it off pretty quick," Whitney recalled. "I don't even remember what I did after. I was looking for guys to celebrate. I don't know where anyone was. It happened pretty quickly. I'm just very fortunate." That gave the Devils a 1-0 lead, but they couldn't take advantage of it in an eventual 3-1 loss. Whitney, 26, has 11 goals and 27 points in 30 AHL contests in 2014-15.

Joe Whitney will make his season debut for the Devils Monday night against the Penguins.

Skating on the top line with Travis Zajac and Jaromir Jagr for most of the first two periods before getting only two shifts in the third, Joe Whitney played eight minutes in the Devils' win Friday night.

He didn't register a shot on goal but "I thought he did a good job," Devils coach Pete DeBoer said. "Tough spot to be thrown into, and I thought he held his own." Whitney turns 26 next week.

Joe Whitney is getting ready to make his NHL debut on Friday.

Whitney has 16 goals and 36 points in 40 AHL contests in 2013-14. He'll turn 26 on Feb. 6, but he's getting a chance to play alongside Travis Zajac and Jaromir Jagr. He's been successful in the AHL for a while now, but the fact that he only stands at 5-foot-6 has led some to doubt his ability to make the leap to the NHL. "You always hear it," Whitney said. "It's something that I can't control and I just work that much harder to overcome it and, for all the people that haven't given me a chance because of it, I try to prove those people wrong."
