Despite the fact that Rasmus Ristolainen had a breakout season in 2015-16, the talented defenseman thinks he can get even better this upcoming campaign.

Ristolainen didn't like his play in the second half and thought he could improve his consistency starting this year. "The first 40 games, they were pretty good and after that, I was struggling a little bit. I was up and down, some good games and some bad games and that’s what I want to get batter at next year" said Ristolainen. Given that he registered 41 points with an emerging Buffalo squad, including 21 power-play points, an improvement would push Ristolainnen into the elite rearguard bracket in the NHL. It will be interesting to see if he can make that jump.

Rasmus Ristolainen will be a restricted free agent this summer and getting him locked up to a new deal will be Buffalo's top priority.

He has progressed in each of his first three seasons in the league. The 21-year-old defender picked up nine goals, 41 points and 202 shots, while averaging 25:16 of ice time per game in 2015-16. Ristolainen also accounted for 21 points on the power play. He just finished his entry-level contract and is due for a big raise.

Although plus/minus ratings always need to be taken with a grain of salt, that's particularly true for Rasmus Ristolainen.

Ristolainen is minus-19 this season, but eight of those goals against come from empty-net markers. He's been on the ice for more empty-net goals against then any other Sabres player, which is part of the reason why he also has the worst plus/minus rating on the team. Ultimately this is something that should correct itself in future campaigns so long as the Sabres continue to improve as expected.
Mar 24 - 10:22 AM

Rasmus Ristolainen did a bit of everything in Friday's 3-1 win over Ottawa.

Ristolainen picked up an assist, a hit, a block, a fight, and nine total PIMs. Making everyone pretty happy. He's now up to 30 assists, 39 points and 29 PIMs on the season.

He ended a 21-game goalless drought in Buffalo's 6-3 win over Calgary. The 21-year-old defender has made positive strides this season with 36 points in 65 games.
Mar 4 - 8:24 AM

Rasmus Ristolainen has generated four assists in the last 14 games.

He also hasn't scored a goal since Jan. 12 against Minnesota. "We've really pushed Rasmus and his game to get better and to keep getting better," coach Dan Bylsma said. "I think in the last little bit tried to do a little bit too much with his offense, a little bit too much with the puck and run into some problems in his game. ... Maybe less is more from him right now in his game and what he's trying to accomplish." The pending restricted free agent is having his best season in the NHL despite his recent struggles. Ristolainen has seven goals and 35 points in 64 games. He was also named to Finland's preliminary World Cup roster on Wednesday.

Jan 13 - 9:42 AM

Rasmus Ristolainen and Josh Gorges have been struggling defensively.

The duo has been on the ice for five of the 13 goals scored at even strength over the last five games. The Sabres have lost five straight and need their top pairing to be more reliable in their own end. Ristolainen leads the team in average ice time per game at 24:48 per match and he has contributed 26 points.
Jan 8 - 7:50 AM

Rasmus Ristolainen has earned 19 points in his last 20 games.

He became the first Sabres' defenseman to register that production over that span since Garry Galley did so from Feb. 21, 1996 to April 3, 1996. Ristolainen earned an assist on Buffalo's third goal in a 3-0 win over Anaheim on Thursday night to set the mark. He has 24 points in 33 games.

Rasmus Ristolainen picked up an assist in Saturday's 2-1 OT win over the Los Angeles Kings.

The 21-year-old has been the fantasy surprise of the season so far. He has four points in his last two games and has 17 points in his last 17 contests. Ristolainen is on pace to score 19 goals and 60 points in 2015-16. We'll see if he can keep this pace up, but he needs to be owned in all fantasy formats.

Rasmus Ristolainen's hat trick Thursday night was quite the milestone.

It was the first three-goal game by a Sabre player since 2013 when Tomas Vanek turned the trick. Ristolainen is also the first Buffalo defenseman to register a hat trick in 27 years. Phil Housely last accomplished the feat in 1988. The Finnish rearguard is having an absolutely terrific season which seems to have come out of nowhere. But don't be fooled as Ristolainen has the pedigree for greatness.

Not many people expected him to have this much of an offensive impact this soon, but he's quickly proven the doubters wrong. Two of his three goals were scored on the power play.
