Rasmus Ristolainen netted a goal and an assist in Thursday's 3-2 overtime win over the Detroit Red Wings.

Ristolainen opened the scoring at the 3:39 mark of the first period, when he beat a screened Jimmy Howard with a wrist shot from the point. He also helped set up Evander Kane's power-play tally in the second frame to give the Sabres 2-1 lead at the time. Ristolainen finished the game with a plus-1 rating, three shots on goal, three hits and four blocked shots in 28 minutes of ice time. The 23-year-old has racked up seven points in his last seven games. He's up to six goals, 29 points and a minus-14 ratings in 52 games this season. Marco Scandella scored the game-winner in overtime.

Rasmus Ristolainen found the back of the net in Saturday's 4-2 loss to the Los Angeles Kings.

Ristolainen's third-period tally cut the Sabres' deficit to 4-2 with under four minutes remaining, but that's as close as they'd come to tying the game. The Sabres blue liner finished the game with two penalty minutes, five shots on goal and one hit in 25:36 of ice time. He now has five goals and 27 points in 50 games this season. Ristolainen has recorded a point in five of his last six contests. Marco Scandella also scored in Buffalo's loss.

Rasmus Ristolainen was benched in Buffalo's 5-4 loss to Colorado on Sunday.

Ristolainen still finished with 23:48 of ice time in the contest, but he didn't get much playing time a 5-on-5 during the second period. He had an assist and a minus-3 rating in the match. "I think you saw the game. I think there's some passengers tonight that weren't prepared to play the game," Housley said after the contest. "I don't think the game was going his way so I just decided to mix up the pairs." The Sabres defender acknowledged that he needs to play better and he will look to bounce back Tuesday against Tampa Bay.

Rasmus Ristolainen picked up a pair of power-play assists with a plus-1 rating in Tuesday's 5-0 win road win against the Oilers.

Ristolainen also chipped in with a blocked shot and two hits across 24:26 of ice time. The rearguard has posted a goal and four assists during his current four-game point streak, a season best run. He'll look to keep it going Thursday in Vancouver. He has also accounted for a power-play goal and five assists on the man advantage in January.

It was a disaster afternoon for the Sabres who didn't look ready to play from the moment the puck was dropped. The only silver lining was Ristolainen reaching 100-career assists when he combined with Jack Eichel and Sam Reinhart for Buffalo's only goal. The Finnish blueliner is now up to 18 points in 38 games this season, with nine coming in his last nine games.

The ice time total was the second-highest of Ristolainen's career in regulation and it included 11:09 of special teams action. "He had an edge to his game and he does that quite often," coach Phil Housley said. "He's a true competitor but it was an extra attitude in his game and it's great to see. We're at a point where we've got to scrape for everything right now and that's the attitude we have to go into games with." Ristolainen didn't pick a point in the contest, but he had a plus-4 rating, two penalty minutes, four shots, two hits and one block. He has no goals and seven assists in 19 games this season.

Rasmus Ristolainen wants to get Buffalo's defense corps a goal this season.

Buffalo is the only team that hasn't picked up a goal yet from their defense group. "I've been thinking about it personally for myself why I haven't scored," Ristolainen said. "Early in the year we maybe were struggling with our net-front presence, and I feel that now it's been there. We've got to keep shooting, and one day it will go in, for sure." He has 39 shots and seven assists in 15 games this season. Ristolainen was moved to a new power-play combination on Monday at practice alongside Ryan O'Reilly, Kyle Okposo, Jason Pominville and Matt Moulson.

Rasmus Ristolainen (upper body) will rejoin the Buffalo Sabres on Friday.

Ristolainen was last able to play on Nov. 2. Getting him back is a huge boost for the Sabres as they lean on him heavily. He's averaged 27:10 minutes per game when healthy in 2017-18. His five assists in 13 contests leave something to be desired, but he should start to pick up the pace offensively.

Sabres coach Phil Housley described Ristolainen as "very close" to returning while Ristolainen seemed even more upbeat. "I told everyone I'm ready," said Ristolainen. "I'm in good shape right now. I felt good. I felt fresh, and the legs were going. It's been long weeks lately, and I'm excited to get back." Ristolainen was hurt on Nov. 2 and his absence has been a big blow to the Sabres as he had been averaging 27:10 minutes per game. He isn't expected to play on Wednesday, but perhaps he'll return as early as Friday.
