Emile Poirier has yet to be cleared for contact after undergoing shoulder surgery last spring.

The original prognosis was a return to action in late-November or early December. The former first round pick, 22nd overall in 2013, played with a bad shoulder all last season and still managed 43 goals and 87 points for Gatineau of the QMJHL before getting four points in two regular season games with Abbotsford of the AHL when his season ended in junior hockey. He will likely return to junior as the Flames will not want to rush him after surgery. He is skating at this time and could be a nice late selection in deep dynasty pools.

Emile Poirier has undergone off-season shoulder surgery.

"He played with a bad wing all year," said Calgary President of Hockey Operations Brian Burke. "We're not going to see him till late-November, early-December." Poirier amassed 43 goals and 87 points in 63 games with Gatineau of the QMJHL in 2013-14. He ended the season with AHL Abbotsford, where he had four points in two regular season matches and one goal in three playoff appearances.

The Calgary Flames have signed Emile Poirier to an entry level contract.

Poirier was the Flames second of three first round picks in the 2013 draft. He is off to a great offensive start with Gatineau of the QMJHL as he has 24 goals and 53 points in only 36 games with 89 penalty minutes. He had a good rookie camp with the Flames but will likely need some minor league time once he turns professional.

The Calgary Flames have sent Emile Poirier to Gatineau of the QMJHL.

Poirier was picked with the 22nd selection of the first round in 2013. He had 70 points and 101 penalty minutes in 65 games with Gatineau last season and while he does not project to be a top scorer, he will likely end up as a top-six forward. "He's been very good," GM Jay Feaster said. "He had a good rookie camp. He had a good camp here. He's not ready to make our hockey team and play in the NHL right now. So for that reason, we decided, 'Let's get him back.' His junior team starts up on the weekend. He's going to be an important guy there, a go-to guy. As we told him, we want him to set the goal in the first half of the season that his play is such that he makes the world-junior team for Canada."

Emile Poirier, one the Flames' three first-round picks in Sunday's entry draft, does not appear fazed in anyway about added pressure he may face due to Calgary's passing on local prospect Hunter Shinkaruk.

The Flames selected Poirier while Medicine Hat star Shinkaruk was still on the board much to the chagrin of many Calgary faithful. But Poirier doesn't seem bothered by the situation or any additional pressure to succeed. "I'm OK with that," Poirier said. "When they came up, I knew it was my chance. I wasn't that sure, but I had a little bit of a feeling about Calgary." At the very least one can say Poirier has a positive and confident attitude.

Emile Poirier has been selected by the Calgary Flames with the 22nd overall pick in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft.

Poirier has skill, but he probably won't develop into a top-tier scorer. That being siad, he plays a competitive, aggressive game and could bring the blend of penalty minutes and points that fantasy owners love. He's not slow, but his skating could use some work as he can be awkward in that regard. He had 70 points and 101 penalty minutes in 65 QMJHL games in 2012-13. He could stand to beef up and should be regarded as a bit of a long-term project.
