The Colorado Avalanche have assigned Chris Bigras to the San Antonio Rampage of the AHL.

Bigras skated in 31 NHL games last year, so the demotion is a little bit of a surprise. When asked why he sent Bigras down, here's what head coach Jared Bedner had to say: "Because he needs to go play. He needs to go play big, important minutes down there. He’s having … he had a great camp. I like what I see from him." The 21-year-old was Colorado's second round pick in 2013. J.T. Compher and Anton Lindholm were also sent to the minors.

Coach Patrick Roy likes the progress that Chris Bigras is making.

"You can tell he needs more experience, especially on the physical side of the game. But I'm very happy with his performance," Roy said. "We agreed as coaches that the more he plays, the more confident he is, and the more confident he is, the better he is playing. He's starting to get more in the rush. He's starting to taking more chances offensively, for example, standing up at the blue line. Earlier he would back up way before, but now he seems to read those plays better and better." He suited up in his 10th game with the Avalanche on Thursday night. Bigras has one assist, five shots and a plus-2 rating since making his NHL debut on Jan. 14.
