Ian McCoshen has been sent down by Florida.
He wasn't going to be in the team's top-six group, so he'll get more playing time in the minors. Steven Kampfer will serve as the seventh defenseman instead. Tue, Oct 11, 2016 10:39:00 AM

Ian McCoshen is hoping to make a great first impression this fall.

McCoshen is making the jump to pro hockey after spending the last three seasons at Boston College. "I have to make a nice first impression,’’ McCoshen said. "I need to get to know the players here, but also establish my game heading into training camp. It’s different here and I was talking to Mike about the transition. He said not to go in with too many expectations or they will just mount on your shoulders. I don’t want that." The 21-year-old was Florida's second round pick, 31st overall, in 2013. There's a good chance he'll start the season in the minors.

The Florida Panthers signed prospect Ian McCoshen to a three-year, entry-level contract worth $925K per season.

McCoshen was Florida's second round pick, 31st overall, in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft. The 20-year-old had spent each of the last three seasons as Boston College. He picked up six goals and 21 points in 40 games. With the departure of Erik Gudbranson and the potential exits of Willie Mitchell and Brian Campbell in free agency, McCoshen could crack the Panthers lineup next season.

The Florida Panthers selected defenseman Ian McCoshen with the first pick of the second round Sunday.

A polished two-way defenseman with size, speed and spirit, McCoshen shows promise and purpose when carrying the puck and is aggressive when battling with forwards. The big American played top-tier minutes for Waterloo this past season and scored 44 points in 53 games with a plus-35 rating. He can potentially fill a second-pairing role in the NHL thanks to his powerful point shot, natural defensive capabilities and playmaking smarts. Committed to Boston College next year, McCoshen will need to improve his skating mechanics and gain more experience before making the leap to the pros.
