Valentin Zykov suffered an upper body injury in the first period Saturday and did not return.

Zykov was playing in only his second NHL game and scoring in his NHL debut Thursday. He was ridden into the boards hard by Roman Polak of the Maple Leafs and never returned. Consider him day-to-day. Zykov was drafted 37th overall by the Kings in 2013 and the 21-year-old who had 15 goals and 30 points in 55 AHL games before his recall, was dealt to the Kings as part of the Kris Versteeg trade a year ago.

Zykov logged 11:53 minutes of ice time and played predominantly on a line with Sebastian Aho and Jordan Staal. Zykov had 15 goals and 30 points in 55 AHL games with the Charlotte Checkers prior to the promotion. "You have to be in front of the net," Hurricanes coach Bill Peters said of Zykov. "He’s already smart enough to know that. I think he was fine for his first game. I’m sure he was a bit nervous, but he settled in and gave us good minutes."

The Carolina Hurricanes acquired prospect Valentin Zykov and a conditional fifth-round pick from the Los Angeles Kings for Kris Versteeg.

Zykov was the Kings' second round pick, 37th overall, in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft. The 20-year-old has a good offensive potential, but he's struggling to produce points in his first season in the AHL. Zykov has seven goals and 14 points in 43 games with the Ontario Reign. He's probably a year or two away from contributing at the NHL level.

The Los Angeles Kings have sent Valentin Zykov to the minors.

Zykov was taken in the second round, 37th overall in the 2013 Draft. He had 21 goals and 45 points in 42 QMJHL games split between Baie Comeau and Gatineau last season. He will need at least one year in the AHL before he can push for a job in the NHL.

The Los Angeles Kings are pleased with the progress Valentin Zykov has made over the last season.

Zykov went from scoring 40 goals and 75 points in 67 games as a QMJHL rookie to 23 goals and 63 points in 53 contests in 2013-14. That might not seem like a step in the right direction, but Zykov has been improving defensively. He signed an entry-level contract with the Kings in May, but he's not expected to make their opening game roster in 2014.

The Los Angeles Kings have confirmed that they have signed prospect Valentin Zykov to an entry-level deal.

Zykov will compete for a roster spot with the Los Angeles Kings during the 2014 preseason, but he's a long shot to actually make the team. The more likely scenario is that Zykov will spend another year in the QMJHL. He was great at that level in 2013-14, scoring 23 goals and 63 points in 53 games.

The Los Angeles Kings have returned Valentin Zykov back to Baie-Comeau of the QMJHL.

Zykov was taken in the second round of the 2013 NHL Draft but many thought the winger was a first round talent. The Kings were so impressed with the youngster that they dealt the 57th, 88th and 96th picks in the 2013 draft to move up to 37th to take the talented Russian who had 75 points in his first CHL season. Look for big things in the future for Zykov.

Valentin Zykov has earned a longer look at training camp, but he's still slated to return to the QMJHL this season.

He wasn't among the first cuts made the Kings on Monday when they returned eight players to their junior teams. Zykov's line apparently played well in the team's preseason loss to Phoenix on Sunday.

The Kings should be very pleased about their selection of scoring winger Valentin Zykov in the second round of the NHL amateur entry draft.

They traded the 57th, 88th and 96th picks to the Oilers to move up to the 37th slot so that they could nab the talented Zykov. The Russian native not only registered 75 points in 67 games in the QMJHL this past season but he did so in his first year in the league and was selected as the Canadian Hockey League rookie of the year. Of Zykov, TSN analyst Craig Button said the following: "When you start to think about a team like the L.A. Kings that struggled to score at those timely moments, you get a guy like this. You need that one chance to score. "He has that type of release like a Jeff Carter. ... When you have those types of players that are threatening, as a defensive team, you've got to always have your eyes on him. That's what he brings." Looks like the Kings got themselves a pretty nice player in the second round.
