Mike McCarron was among 15 players released from the Team USA national junior evaluation camp.

McCarron had some trouble adjusting to the OHL last season. "I had a pretty tough start there with a couple of things I had to get used to," McCarron said. "And then come Christmas I was a little upset (with my play). I had to pick it up. And the second half I thought I played pretty well. I would say pretty average season." He recorded 14 goals, 20 assists and 120 penalty minutes in 66 games during the regular season for the London Knights. He added three goals, five points and 22 minutes in the sin bin in nine playoff matches. McCarron expects to perform better this year.

Mike McCarron has been returned to the London Knights of the OHL.

Montreal's first-round pick in 2013 had some strong showings during camp, but he was always viewed as a long shot to make the big club. He'll rejoin the Knights and get to work on his game before becoming a pro player.

Mike McCarron posted an impressive stat line in his pre-season debut with the Canadiens Sunday night.

He registered two assists, two penalty minutes, two shots and five hits in 14:48 of ice time during Montreal's 5-4 shootout loss to Buffalo. McCarron was on the ice for three of the Canadiens' four goals in the contest. He was taken with the 25th overall pick in the 2013 draft. He will probably return to the OHL at some point for more seasoning, but it won't be long before he makes the jump to the NHL where he will add some much-needed size and grit to Montreal's lineup.

Mike McCarron would like to start the 2013-14 season with Montreal.

He is projected to play in some preseason contests to see if he can impress the Canadiens' coaching staff. McCarron will display his toughness during that time, but if he's not ready then he will play in the OHL for the London Knights.

Canadiens first-round pick Mike McCarron has a college commitment to play for Western Michigan, but his junior rights are owned by the London Knights of the OHL.

"The ultimate decision will be mine but I'll talk it over with my parents and (the Canadiens) and make a decision sometime in the next week," said McCarron. "Western Michigan would give me a chance to work on the strength in my legs and Andy Murray is a good coach who's worked in the NHL. London plays more of a pro style and they play more games. If I play junior, I'd also be able to fight and that's part of my game." The 6-foot-5, 228-pound winger, who the Habs took 25th overall at the 2013 draft, said he wants to play a similar game to Boston's Milan Lucic.

Mike McCarron has been taken with the 25th overall pick in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft.

McCarron is a bit of a risky pick as scouts have been divided on his future. If he is the sum of his parts, then he could be a great pick for Montreal, but he can leave observes unsatisfied given all his skills. At 6-foot-5, 228-pounds, he's certainly a big man and he moves nicely for one. He'll also use that size to his advantage and consequently has potential as a two-way forward at the NHL level. He had 10 points and 84 penalty minutes in 19 USHL games last season.
