Ryan Hartman isn't able to participate in Chicago's prospect camp because he's recovering from shoulder surgery.

"It's definitely tough being on the other side of the glass, but I've been working out and doing other stuff," Hartman said. "I might be ahead of schedule a little bit, so it's feeling really good right now." Chicago selected Hartman with the 30th overall pick in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft. He's from Illinois and is a "lifelong Blackhawks fans."

Ryan Hartman, the Blackhawks' first-round selection in Sunday's entry draft, is a local Chicago boy.

That is not why the Hawks chose him, but it is a little added bonus for the player and the team. "Ryan Hartman is a great first pick", said Hawk GM Stan Bowman. "It's a nice story that he's a Chicago kid, but that's not the reason we picked him He's a heart-and-soul kind of guy. He plays hard, he gets under the other team's skin, but he's got a lot of talent as well". Not surprisingly, Hartman was thrilled with his destination. "I saw their name [Blackhawks] on the lower end of the board, and I was picturing my name being there," Hartman said. "I was kind of hoping they'd pick me. I had my palms sweating a little bit, and my mom was a little anxious to hear my name called. Obviously, they're a great team. Being a hometown kid also makes it a little bit sweeter. I'll try to make the jump as soon as possible and see if I can make my fit on this team." Nice story.

The Blackhawks selected Ryan Hartman with the last pick of the first round of the 2013 NHL entry draft.

Hartman made a name for himself in his first season removed from the United States National Team Development Program playing for the Plymouth Whalers of the OHL. He’s known for his gritty, agitating style of play, as he finished with 120 PIMs in 56 games. However, he is deceptively effective offensively as his 60 points for Plymouth this past season will attest. He's also a gifted skater. While Hartman may take poor minor penalties at times, he’s one of the best in the draft at rattling his opponent. Moreover, he’s very versatile and can fit in on lines with different types of players. He sustained a severe cut on his wrist early in the OHL playoffs, but returned later in Plymouth’s post-season run. The prevailing thought is that the injury won’t be an issue going forward.
