Corban Knight was surprised to get picked for the shootout Friday night.

His goal ended up winning the game for the Flames against the Stars. He played only three shifts in the third and none in overtime, and figured he was done for the game. "I was just sitting there, kind of enjoying the view. Then, all of a sudden, I get tapped," Knight said. "It’s amazing how fast my body reacted to that, because about a millisecond after he touched me, I instantly started shaking."

The Calgary Flames have sent Corban Knight to the minors.

The Flames like Knight and expect him to return to Calgary this season. "(GM) Jay (Feaster) and (coach) Bob (Hartley) made it very clear this isn't a negative, it's part of the process," Knight said from Abbotsford, the Flames AHL farm team. "They were happy with how camp went and believed it's better for me to come here and work to get better. They said they see me as part of the plans going forward and that's positive and exciting. It is tough getting sent down but it's exciting to be told to work on a few things and it'll be right there." Knight played the last four seasons with the University of North Dakota and will make his pro debut.

Corban Knight scored once but coach Troy Ward was not happy with his performance in Calgary's 3-2 loss to Vancouver.

It was a rookie game, but Ward was not at all happy with the effort of Knight who is in his first training camp after playing four seasons at the University of North Dakota. "To be honest, he's got to play with some passion, some vigor," said Ward. "This isn't college - you're not going to have the puck all the time. You're going to have to go get it back. When Corban has the puck, I'm fine with that. But when he doesn't have it, he's going to have to play like (Michael) Ferland . . . and get his nose dirty." Knight averaged at least a point a game in his last three years with North Dakota, including a 16 goal, 49 point performance in 41 games during the 2012-13 season. He will start the season with Abbotsford of the AHL but the former fifth round pick could get a look see with Calgary at some point during the season if he performs well in the minors.

Corban Knight got the opportunity to train with some NHLers over the summer as he prepared for his first camp.

"It’s given me a sense of how good the league is," Knight said. "You watch it growing up and on T.V., it doesn't really do it justice how good these guys are. It’s been an eye-opening experience this summer but I feel good and feel like I could definitely challenge for a spot in training camp." Knight spent the last four seasons with the University of North Dakota. He scored 16 goals and 49 points in 41 NCAA games in 2012-13.

The Florida Panthers gave Corban Knight the choice of picking between the Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers before he was traded.

Knight went with Calgary and the Flames sent a fourth round pick to Florida in exchange for the prospect's rights. Knight then inked an entry-level contract with Calgary. "Two things stood out," Knight said. "Obviously, the tradition and the passion that everybody has for the Flames. Being from High River, I grew up around it. I saw it everywhere I went. You don’t see that everywhere you go . . . so the fact that I could be a part of that was like a dream come true. And from a hockey standpoint, with Calgary — the talks I’ve had with management, with coaches — there is a real opportunity to try to build a career here. I’m not an 18-year-old kid who just got drafted. I’m at that stage of my career where I’m physically ready." He had 16 goals and 49 points in 41 NCAA games in 2012-13.
