Nic Petan is still in Winnipeg's camp after 16 players were trimmed from the roster on Monday.
JC Lipon and Thomas Raffl are also still with the big club as bubble forwards. They are battling for one spot on the team. However, it would probably be better for Petan's development to play a larger role in the minors than seeing limited NHL minutes. Sep 29 - 9:51 AM

As Nic Petan hopes to make the Winnipeg Jets, he believes he's really improved his defense to make that happen.

"This past season I just focused on defensive play, faceoffs, being low in my own zone. I thought I got better at it," Petan said. The 20-year-old had 15 goals and 89 points in 54 WHL contests in 2014-15, which is actually down from 113 points in his previous campaign. The 43rd pick of the 2013 NHL Draft will probably get a decent shot next season.

Winnipeg Jets forward Nick Petan says he's done everything he can to earn a roster spot with the team this season.

"I think I've done pretty well," said Petan. "In six games, I think I've shown hard work and I've played my game as a smaller player and just done everything I can, I think." The 19-year-old was the Jets’ second round pick in 2013, and has one year of junior eligibility remaining. Nicolas Petan will play between Michael Frolik and Andrew Ladd in Thursday's exhibition game against Calgary.

"It's always nice playing with the big boys," he said. "It's very fitting, I think. I'm using the word 'comfortable' a lot, but it makes me feel very comfortable playing with guys like that." Petan amassed 35 goals and 78 assists in just 63 games last season with the WHL's Portland Winterhawks. The Jets have been giving some of their top prospects long looks at training camp and now it's Petan's turn to play on a scoring line.

The Winnipeg Jets liked adding WHL scorer Nicolas Petan in the second round of their 2013 draft haul.

"He was ranked extremely high on a lot of lists," GM Kevin Cheveldayoff said. "Size is probably something where you look and go, 'Huh....' But his hockey sense, his competitiveness, his ability to make other players better, the way he sees the ice... he's a real fun player to watch and when you talk to other players a real fun player to play with." Petan racked up 46 goals and 120 points in 71 games with Portland of the WHL this past season.
