Look for the Pittsburgh Penguins to get a backup goaltender this summer and have Tristan Jarry start the 2017-18 campaign in the minors.
"He’s definitely ready [to play games in the NHL]," Penguins goaltending coach Mike Buckley said of Jarry. "It’s always best to give him more time, so that’s what we’re going to do. We’re going to give him another year." Jarry is coming off a strong season where he posted a 2.15 GAA and .925 save percentage in 45 AHL contests. Assuming the Penguins do get a backup goaltender, Jarry might still be called upon at various points during the 2017-18 campaign as an injury replacement. Jun 30 - 9:15 AM

Tristan Jarry is enjoying the experience of serving as the Penguins' backup goaltender in the playoffs.

Jarry is in that role because Matt Murray has been sidelined with a lower-body injury. While Jarry hasn't played at all in the postseason so far, with every game there is a chance that the Penguins will end up needing their backup goalie. "It’s definitely a cool experience," Jarry said. "It’s something, for me, that’s definitely been my goal. Make it up here, try to do the best I can. I think that’s something that I’ve been trying to accomplish this year, just working as hard as I can every day and getting better every day."

Don't be surprised if Tristan Jarry is the Penguins backup goalie in 2017-18.

The Penguins will almost surely lose Marc-Andre Fleury as each team is allowed to protect one goalie in the Vegas expansion draft and Pittsburgh most likely will keep Matt Murray. That means a trade of Fleury or they risk losing him for nothing. Jarry has been strong once again this season for Wilkes-Barre as he is 12-5-0 with a 2.10 GAA and .924 save percentage in 18 games. He will make a nice handcuff for the Penguins starter next season.

The Pittsburgh Penguins weren't comfortable with the idea of having Tristan Jarry serve as Marc-Andre Fleury's backup because they want the youngster to play regularly.

With Matt Murray on the shelf, it appeared as though Jarry would open the season as the team's backup goalie. When the team claimed Mike Condon on waivers from Montreal, they sent Jarry back to the farm. "We've had lengthy discussions about how we're going to handle this situation coming out of training camp, and we think it's in Tristan's best interest that he plays," coach Mike Sullivan said. "We're ecstatic with the training camp that he had. He played extremely well in the opportunities that he's been given. We're thrilled with the progress that he's made.

If Matt Murray (thumb) isn't ready for the regular season, then it looks like Tristan Jarry will be the Penguins' temporary backup goaltender.

Jarry was competing for that role with Casey DeSmith and Leland Irving, but the latter two were sent to the minors on Monday, so it seems like that battle has been decided. Jarry posted a 2.69 GAA and .905 save percentage in 33 AHL contests in 2015-16.
