Bobby Robins has decided to hang up his skates after suffering a concussion in his NHL debut on Oct. 8.
Robins went on to play in two other games for the Boston Bruins in October before being shutdown for the remainder of the season. He's back to 100% now, but he doesn't want to risk his health by resuming his playing career. "Hockey is what I know. It's what I do. But after getting my head banged up like that, it was -- no pun intended -- a no-brainer for me," Robins said. "I couldn't do it anymore. After the lowest points that I experienced, to where I am now, where I feel like myself again, there was no way I was ever going to risk getting hit in the head again or going through that again." Robins will turn 34 in October. His lengthy journey to the NHL involved spending parts of seven seasons in the minors and an additional two campaigns in Europe. Thu, Jul 9, 2015 06:35:00 PM

Bobby Robins has been sidelined since October because of a concussion.

It's believed that he sustained it during his first NHL game back on Oct. 8 when he fought Philadelphia's Luke Schenn. However, he played the next night in Detroit and then dropped the gloves again with Washington forward Michael Latta on Oct. 11. "After that first game, looking back, obviously I should have said something and sat out, but I would have literally played through anything at that point," said Robins, who went back to the AHL after skating in three games with Boston. "I was almost in denial, thinking it would go away, and it never did."

He was assessed a charging penalty and fought Philadelphia's Luke Schenn on the same play at the 10:52 mark of the second period. Robins was credited with five hits during his 6:58 of ice time. He made the Bruins to provide energy and physicality and he fulfilled his role well in the team's season opener.

Bobby Robins will begin the 2014-15 campaign with the Boston Bruins.

"We know he can handle himself well," coach Claude Julien said. "But more than that, he's a guy that in preseason games has given our team some energy. He's shown that he can still play. He made some good plays. His hands aren't bad and he finishes all his checks. We talk about being a team that's hard to play against and want to be a bit more of a physical team, I think he fits that mold really well." Robins registered 14 points and 221 penalty minutes in 68 games last season with AHL Providence. If he plays regularly during his time in Boston then he could be someone to watch if your league rewards hits and PIMs.

Bobby Robins has made a good impression on coach Claude Julien during training camp.

"I think he's certainly making a case for himself," said Julien. "When you see what he brings and how hard he works and the energy that he gives our team, and everything else that we know about him, I'm certainly not ready to write him off yet." Boston still has Robins at training camp because he can replenish some toughness that was lost when the club decided not to bring back Shawn Thorton.
