The Detroit Red Wings have assigned Tyler Bertuzzi to AHL Grand Rapids.
The 21-year-old nephew of former power forward Todd Bertuzzi, posted 30 points in 71 games in his first full season with Grand Rapids last season. That's good production for one's first full season of pro hockey. Expect his growth to continue, but we wouldn't count on him to be a fantasy asset. Oct 8 - 4:05 PM

The Detroit Red Wings would like to see Tyler Bertuzzi put together a strong full season in the AHL.

There's been some discussion about Bertuzzi possibly sticking with the Red Wings out of training camp, but it sounds more and more like he'll spend most of the 2016-17 season in the AHL. "He had half a season where he played good in the American League," head coach Jeff Blashill said. "Let’s have a full season. Let’s not rush it if it doesn’t need to. He’ll have a chance in the preseason where he can say he’s real close or not close, and we’ll see."

Todd Bertuzzi likes his nephew Tyler's chances of making Detroit's roster.

"Not to go outside my realm here, but I think he's a player the Wings could use," Todd said. "He's an energy guy, good with the puck, and good defensively. ... I think there's a good possibility that if he has a very good camp and keeps his head small, goes in there and works hard, there's a good chance he shows them something." Wings assistant GM Ryan Martin said the team is high on Tyler Bertuzzi and he added that "it wouldn't be a surprise if he opened some eyes." If Bertuzzi doesn't make the team out of camp then he should see some NHL action at some point in 2016-17.

Tyler Bertuzzi will spend the summer in Detroit training with some of the Red Wings.

"We're excited about that," Red Wings assistant to the general manager Kris Draper said. "He's going to train and skate there, and that's him showing a commitment to us. From there, he's going to have an opportunity to make a statement for the Detroit Red Wings in training camp." Bertuzzi will be one of the Red Wings' players to watch during training camp. He has the potential to be a great power forward in the NHL. He's coming off an AHL rookie campaign where he recorded 30 points and 133 penalty minutes in 71 contests. He added another eight points in nine AHL playoff games.

Tyler Bertuzzi had a strong showing with the AHL's Grand Rapids Griffins.

Bertuzzi was assigned to the squad after completing his campaign with the OHL's Guelph Storm. He scored a goal in two regular season games before recording another seven goals and 12 points in 13 playoff contests. "Bert has been really good," Griffins coach Jeff Blashill said. "He's come in and he's another guy whose game fits the playoff type of hockey that we're in. He wins puck battles, he goes to the net hard, and he has the ability to play with good players. He's been giving us a lot of everything." Detroit typically likes to allow its players to get plenty of seasoning in the minors before allowing them to play regularly at the NHL level, but Bertuzzi will still be worth keeping an eye on during training camp.

Tyler is the son of Todd Bertuzzi's sister, Angela, and he was chosen by the Red Wings in the second round of the 2013 draft. "It was a neat experience, for sure," Todd said. "He looked pretty good out there. Sometimes when you're younger, you get running around a little bit, but I thought he had some nice plays and did well."
