Lightning prospect Matthew Peca said he is looking to improve his game.
"I’m trying to improve my game, on and off the ice, get as strong as I can," Peca said. "It’s obviously a big jump when you are going up against men at the pro level compared to college. I want to get stronger on pucks, and honestly, it’s the same thing every year where you are growing as a player. Now I’m going into playing professionally, so it’s a little different game. So just study that a little more than the college game." The 22-year-old was selected in the 7th round of the 2011 draft. He just finished up his career at Quinnipiac University. Matthew Peca had offseason shoulder surgery and is consequently not participating in on-ice activities during the Lightning's development camp.

Peca had 12 goals and 38 points in 40 games with Quinnipiac University in 2013-14. He plans to return to college for his senior year. "There is still a lot I need to improve on, but I feel that I've matured as a player," said Peca. "We've had two good seasons the last two years (at school), but we haven’t won anything. We've been to the Frozen Four, but we didn't win anything, so as a team we have a lot to prove."

The Tampa Bay Lightning think they have a hidden gem in Matthew Peca.

Peca was selected with the 201st overall pick in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. "Every time we watched Matthew in his draft year he was the most talented guy on the ice and most competitive guy on the ice in all 200 feet with and without the puck," said Lightning director of amateur scouting Al Murray. Peca has stepped up since then with 15 goals and 30 points in 39 NCAA games last season. He's returning to Quinnipiac University for his third season with the team. He'd have another year of eligibility after that, but he's open to turning pro following the 2013-14 campaign if the opportunity presents itself.
