The Carolina Hurricanes have signed Jake Chelios to a one-year, two-way contract.

Chelios can earn $575,000 if he spends the season in the NHL or $70,000 at the AHL level. He had seven goals and 31 points in 73 contests with the AHL's Charlotte Checkers in 2015-16. "Jake was a steady presence for Charlotte last season in his first full season playing defense," said Hurricanes GM Ron Francis. Jake Chelios has been participating in the Blackhawks' prospects camp while his father, Chris Chelios, has been selected to join the Hockey Hall of Fame.

"Obviously he’s really excited; it’s a huge honor. It’s probably one of the best things you can do in sports," Jake said. "To wait for (three) years after you’re done playing and get all this excitement back, it’s so good for him." Jake has spent the last three seasons playing for Michigan State University and plans to finish up his tenure with them next season. After that he might go pro and get his career started by working in the AHL.
