Jake Virtanen scored his ninth goal of the season Sunday in a 4-1 road win over Dallas.
The Canucks took Virtanen sixth overall in 2014 and the 21-year-old has not had much luck at the NHL level thus far. But there is light at the end of the tunnel as the power forward is starting to look like he belongs in the NHL. He will be fantasy-relevant in a couple of seasons, with the big question being, will he make an impact next year. We shall see. Mar 26 - 8:13 AM

Jake Virtanen went for a goal, an assist and a plus-2 rating with four shots on goal and five hits across 14:48 of ice time in Monday's game against the Islanders.

Virtanen put the brakes on a six-game scoreless drought with just his second multi-point game since Dec. 21. Despite the multi-point game, he has managed just seven goals and 15 points this season and his fantasy appeal remains rather minimal.
Mar 6 - 2:47 AM

Jake Virtanen finished scoreless with two shots on goal, three minor penalties and a hit Monday in Colorado.

Virtanen rang one off the post in the third period with his team down 1-0. The Avalanche immediately took it back the other way and Nathan MacKinnon wired one past Jacob Markstrom for what stood up as the game-winning tally. It was a tough break for Virtanen, who nearly had his first since Feb. 11. He has no goals and just one assist over the past seven outings so his fantasy appeal is rather negligible.
Feb 26 - 11:55 PM

Jake Virtanen (illness) is back at practice after missing yesterday's game against the Anaheim Ducks.

Virtanen has nine points in 35 games this season and should be fully recovered in time for Saturday's all-Canadian matchup with the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Jan 3 - 2:40 PM

The Vancouver Canucks will not have Jake Virtanen in the lineup due to an illness.

There will be a shuffle in the lineup for the Canucks with Virtanen being forced to miss out and Chris Tanev returning from his injury. Alex Biega and Ben Hutton will be scratched, while Reid Boucher will play in Virtanen's place.
Jan 2 - 9:45 PM

Jake Virtanen is projected to draw into the Canucks' lineup on Saturday.

Virtanen was a healthy scratch Thursday night. He's averaging just 9:44 minutes per game when he is in the lineup so even though he'll be playing, his role might be minimal. The former sixth overall pick has two goals and four points in 15 games this season.

Jake Virtanen was a healthy scratch on Thursday.

Even in the 15 games Virtanen has played in this season, he's averaged just 9:44 minutes. There are concerns about how that might impact the 21-year-old's development, but that doesn't seem to be Canucks coach Travis Green's focus. "I’m not going to put Jake in for the better of Jake," Green said. "It’s a fine line between developing and doing what’s right for an individual and doing what’s right for the team." Virtanen has two goals and four points in 15 contests.

It appears Jake Virtanen will be a healthy scratch tonight when the Canucks play the Sharks.

Virtanen and Gaunce both took part in the optional morning skate. Virtanen has four points in 16 games and has failed to live up to his sixth overall pick draft status.

Jake Virtanen registered an assist in Vancouver's 5-3 win over Calgary on Tuesday.

Virtanen ended his five-game point drought. He has two goals and four points in 14 contests in 2017-18. The 21-year-old has potential, but he's not worth owning in standard leagues at this time.

Jake Virtanen scored the only goal in Vancouver's 1-0 win over the Minnesota Wild on Tuesday night.

Virtanen broke the scoreless tie at the 10:07 mark of the third frame, as he created a turnover in the neutral zone before scoring off a wrist shot. That was his only shot on goal of the game. Virtanen had no goals in his first six games of the season, but he's managed to find the back of the net in back-to-back games. He has three points in eight contests this season.

Jake Virtanen scored his first of the season Sunday.

Virtanen was placed on a line with Daniel and Henrik Sedin Friday and it seems a light just went on as Virtanen has been a wonderful addition to the Canucks top-six. He had eight shots on goal Sunday as he was a wrecking machine. Virtanen has been considered a bust since he was taken sixth overall in 2014 but he is only 21 and a lot of players take longer to turn into NHL players. It's hard to recommend him off two games but he certainly has played a lot better this past weekend.

Being a healthy scratch on Saturday was a message sent to Jake Virtanen.

Travis Green, the Canucks new head coach, had him at Utica last season where Virtanen seemed to have started to turn around his career. "He’ll be the first to admit it, he wasn’t very good the other night," Green said. He needs to ... I just thought his intensity level, his assertiveness wasn’t where it had to be. I know Jake well. Am I worried about taking him out? Is it going to impact our speed? Meh, a little bit. I’m not just going to keep a guy in because he’s fast. Part of this is making sure Jake knows how he has to play. Getting him to play the way he needs to." Virtanen was drafted sixth overall in 2014 and while he seems like a bust at this time, he is still only 21.

Jake Virtanen will be a healthy scratch for the Vancouver Canucks during tonight's game against the Calgary Flames.

Virtanen only played seconds Thursday and it looks like he won't even draw into the lineup at all Saturday. In three games this year he's yet to register a point. Travis Green confirmed the news hours before game time tonight.

Jake Virtanen only logged seven seconds of playing time in the third period of Vancouver's 4-2 loss to Winnipeg on Thursday.

In total, Virtanen logged 7:06 minutes of ice time. His benching in the third probably had more to do with the fact that the Canucks were behind than anything Virtanen did wrong. He has plenty of potential, but his fantasy value will likely be close to nil if he doesn't earn a bigger role. As it is his average is at 8:42 minutes over three games this season.

Jake Virtanen scored on Saturday and ended the preseason with four goals and six points in six games.

The youngster was the sixth overall pick in 2014 but last season was a disaster as Virtanen ended up playing most of the season in the AHL. But he seems to have clicked with new Vancouver coach Travis Green, who was his coach in Utica last season as Virtanen has been a new player this season. Look for Virtanen to get 15 goals and 35-40 points as he finally gives the Canucks something to cheer about this season.
