Being a healthy scratch on Saturday was a message sent to Jake Virtanen.
Travis Green, the Canucks new head coach, had him at Utica last season where Virtanen seemed to have started to turn around his career. "He’ll be the first to admit it, he wasn’t very good the other night," Green said. He needs to ... I just thought his intensity level, his assertiveness wasn’t where it had to be. I know Jake well. Am I worried about taking him out? Is it going to impact our speed? Meh, a little bit. I’m not just going to keep a guy in because he’s fast. Part of this is making sure Jake knows how he has to play. Getting him to play the way he needs to." Virtanen was drafted sixth overall in 2014 and while he seems like a bust at this time, he is still only 21. Oct 15 - 9:49 AM

Jake Virtanen will be a healthy scratch for the Vancouver Canucks during tonight's game against the Calgary Flames.

Virtanen only played seconds Thursday and it looks like he won't even draw into the lineup at all Saturday. In three games this year he's yet to register a point. Travis Green confirmed the news hours before game time tonight.
Oct 14 - 9:34 PM

Jake Virtanen only logged seven seconds of playing time in the third period of Vancouver's 4-2 loss to Winnipeg on Thursday.

In total, Virtanen logged 7:06 minutes of ice time. His benching in the third probably had more to do with the fact that the Canucks were behind than anything Virtanen did wrong. He has plenty of potential, but his fantasy value will likely be close to nil if he doesn't earn a bigger role. As it is his average is at 8:42 minutes over three games this season.
Oct 13 - 5:34 AM

Jake Virtanen scored on Saturday and ended the preseason with four goals and six points in six games.

The youngster was the sixth overall pick in 2014 but last season was a disaster as Virtanen ended up playing most of the season in the AHL. But he seems to have clicked with new Vancouver coach Travis Green, who was his coach in Utica last season as Virtanen has been a new player this season. Look for Virtanen to get 15 goals and 35-40 points as he finally gives the Canucks something to cheer about this season.
Oct 1 - 9:12 AM

Jake Virtanen scored a goal in Thursday's 3-1 win over the Calgary Flames.

Virtanen was the sixth overall pick in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft, but his NHL career has gotten off to a bit of a slow start. The 21-year-old played in 55 games with the Canucks in 2015-16, but that number dropped to 10 last season (he had just one assist during that stretch). Virtanen had nine goals and 10 assists in 65 games with AHL Utica.
Sep 29 - 12:39 AM

Jake Virtanen picked up a goal and an assist in Wednesday's 5-3 win over the Calgary Flames.

The 21-year-old was the sixth overall pick in the 2014 draft, but his career has been a little disappointing so far. Virtanen has suited up in 65 games over his first two years, and he's only managed to score seven goals and seven assists during that time. He's still young, but it would be nice to see him take a huge step forward this year.
Sep 20 - 11:59 PM

On a day that the Vancouver Canucks recalled four players, Jake Virtanen remained in the minors.

It looks like the Canucks think that playing the rest of the season for Utica will be the best thing long-term for the youngster who was drafted sixth overall in 2014. He has only five goals and 11 points in 44 AHL games with a goal and four points in his last 20. Maybe there was another reason for the Canucks keeping him down and that was a lack of production.
Feb 26 - 10:41 AM

Although the numbers don't show it, Jake Virtanen has been improving in the minors.

Virtanen was selected sixth overall in 2014 but has yet to make a significant dent in the NHL as he had only seven goals and 13 points last season in 55 games and was sent to the minors this season after only one helper in 10 games. He has four AHL goals and seven points in 24 games but coach Travis Green has been impressed. "He has come here with a good attitude," said Green. "Sometimes, when players come down, it’s hard to get them into a mindset, but that hasn’t been the case since Day 1 with Jake. He has put in the work because when he first got here, playing 15 minutes was hard and he’s handling them well now. He’s getting to play a lot of minutes and getting practices during the week that he doesn’t get in the NHL and that’s all positive stuff for him. And I’m not concerned about his points because we don’t have an offensive group here and we’re constantly changing our lines. We want Jake to develop into a good pro who can play a 200-foot game."
Jan 15 - 10:32 AM

Jake Virtanen was playing on the third line in the AHL Saturday.

Virtanen was projected to be a huge power forward with explosive speed and a lightning shot when picked sixth overall in 2014 but power forwards usually need more seasoning and that appears to be happening to the 20-year-old. He had seven goals and 13 points last season in 55 games with 45 penalty minutes but it sure looks like he needs some confidence as he has only four goals and seven points in 20 AHL games. Don't give up on him in keeper leagues but you sure can in yearly pools.
Jan 1 - 11:12 AM

Jake Virtanen scored his first goal in the AHL this season on the weekend.

Virtanen was sent to the minors on November 16 and started the game on the fourth line so he has not been impressive at all. He has three points in 10 games with Utica and it looks like it could be a while if at all this season, that he returns to the Canucks. He may need a change of scenery to get his career back in gear.

Jake Virtanen has been sent down to Utica of the AHL.

He has one assist in 10 games with the Canucks this season, but he hasn't played in a game with the team since Nov. 5. Virtanen has averaged just 10:09 of ice time in 2016-17.
Wed, Nov 16, 2016 12:42:00 PM

Jake Virtanen, who has been recalled after a two-game stint in the AHL, will not play in Sunday's match with Dallas.

Through 10 games with the Canucks the 20-year-old has but a helper and little else to show for his efforts. What's worse is that he's averaged just 10:09 per game thus far. His future may be bright, but the immediate outlook is not fantasy viable.

Virtanen has an assist in 10 games this season. He spent two straight games in the press box before Vancouver decided to send him to the minors.
