The trade for Emerson Etem will have no effect on whether or not Jake Virtanen stays or goes back to junior.

The talented Virtanen lacks the confidence to play in the NHL at this time so it seemed like a no-brainer that Virtanen would be sent down but there seems to be some dissent. No, it doesn’t," GM Jim Benning said when asked if the trade meant that Virtanen was being sent down. "Emerson can play either side, he can play the left side or he can play the right side. We met on Jake the other day, we have a plan for him going forward and for the time being he is going to be with the team and we add Emerson Etem to our mix."
