Vancouver GM Jim Benning appreciates the work that Jake Virtanen has put in during the off-season.

"He's having a good summer. He's been working out hard," said Benning. "When he showed up in Utica (for the AHL playoffs), he was 228 pounds. He's down to 210 now. He has bought into doing the work off the ice and watching his diet and giving himself every opportunity he can to make our team." He will turn 19-years old next week and will try to impress the Canucks' staff at training camp. It will be tough for the sixth overall pick in the 2014 draft to play in the NHL this season.

First round pick Jake Virtanen will no be allowed any contact until the middle of October because of off-season shoulder surgery.

The surgery took place in May and while Virtanen is skating and shooting with the big club in training camp, he is a bit frustrated because he can't give or take a hit. "It’s pretty frustrating watching the guys do battle drills because I want to be in there," Virtanen, 6-1 and 214 pounds, said. "I'm a young kid, but I'm not the smallest guy out there and I think I could be doing well in those battle drills. There are certain times. . . you think you could make a big hit. You have that feeling like, I wish that was me so I could make an impression. Personally, I've come far since my shoulder (surgery). It's great right now. It's strong. I'm really looking forward to just getting back into the groove of things and getting back into the physical part of the game." He is worth taking in dynasty pools but not in one-year drafts as he is most likely returning to junior hockey.

Jake Virtanen (shoulder) hasn't been able to participate in the rookie tournament.

"I really want to get back as quick as possible, but I don't want to rush anything with the shoulder," Virtanen said. "Watching these guys in the games when I'm just sitting in the crowd, it's definitely tough. But I think it's also good for me as a learning lesson. I'm taking positives from sitting in the stands, too — just taking advice and tips from the guys who are playing and watching how the game flows and how it goes and how it intense it is." Virtanen had 45 goals, 71 points, and 100 penalty minutes in 71 WHL games in 2013-14. He was taken with the sixth overall pick of the 2014 NHL Entry Draft.

Canucks prospect Jake Virtanen updated the status of his recovery from shoulder surgery on Thursday, saying that he is really happy with his progress so far.

"I had that fear when I got surgery that it was going to feel different," Virtanen told Metro. "I don’t want to force anything but (the shoulder) feels great." The youngster will likely play for the Calgary Hitmen this season and projects to be a gritty, goal-scoring top-six forward in the future. Virtanen should be cleared for contact in the coming days and is targeting a return to action in the middle of October.

Jake Virtanen has been picked by the Vancouver Canucks with the sixth overall selection in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft.

Virtanen is the full package; a massive power forward with explosive speed and a lightening shot. The six-foot, 208 pounder is a decent playmaker with great vision who excels at taking the puck to the net and pounding his opponents with his size and drive. He was a 45-goal scorer this past season with the Calgary Hitmen, notching 71 points in as many games as a WHL sophomore. He plays a style similar to Jarome Iginla, and torments defensemen with his quick acceleration and gifted ability to put the puck in the net. He should end up as a tough, offensive-minded top-six forward in the NHL, but he may be a year or two away from making his way to the big show.
