On a day that the Vancouver Canucks recalled four players, Jake Virtanen remained in the minors.
It looks like the Canucks think that playing the rest of the season for Utica will be the best thing long-term for the youngster who was drafted sixth overall in 2014. He has only five goals and 11 points in 44 AHL games with a goal and four points in his last 20. Maybe there was another reason for the Canucks keeping him down and that was a lack of production. Although the numbers don't show it, Jake Virtanen has been improving in the minors.

Virtanen was selected sixth overall in 2014 but has yet to make a significant dent in the NHL as he had only seven goals and 13 points last season in 55 games and was sent to the minors this season after only one helper in 10 games. He has four AHL goals and seven points in 24 games but coach Travis Green has been impressed. "He has come here with a good attitude," said Green. "Sometimes, when players come down, it’s hard to get them into a mindset, but that hasn’t been the case since Day 1 with Jake. He has put in the work because when he first got here, playing 15 minutes was hard and he’s handling them well now. He’s getting to play a lot of minutes and getting practices during the week that he doesn’t get in the NHL and that’s all positive stuff for him. And I’m not concerned about his points because we don’t have an offensive group here and we’re constantly changing our lines. We want Jake to develop into a good pro who can play a 200-foot game."

Jake Virtanen was playing on the third line in the AHL Saturday.

Virtanen was projected to be a huge power forward with explosive speed and a lightning shot when picked sixth overall in 2014 but power forwards usually need more seasoning and that appears to be happening to the 20-year-old. He had seven goals and 13 points last season in 55 games with 45 penalty minutes but it sure looks like he needs some confidence as he has only four goals and seven points in 20 AHL games. Don't give up on him in keeper leagues but you sure can in yearly pools.

Jake Virtanen scored his first goal in the AHL this season on the weekend.

Virtanen was sent to the minors on November 16 and started the game on the fourth line so he has not been impressive at all. He has three points in 10 games with Utica and it looks like it could be a while if at all this season, that he returns to the Canucks. He may need a change of scenery to get his career back in gear.

Jake Virtanen has been sent down to Utica of the AHL.

Jake Virtanen, who has been recalled after a two-game stint in the AHL, will not play in Sunday's match with Dallas.

Through 10 games with the Canucks the 20-year-old has but a helper and little else to show for his efforts. What's worse is that he's averaged just 10:09 per game thus far. His future may be bright, but the immediate outlook is not fantasy viable.

Jake Virtanen, Nikita Tryamkin and Alex Biega will each be scratched against the Sabres on Thursday night.

Virtanen has not produced through his first two games of action, seeing just over 10 minutes per. That's a rough start for the 20-year-old, who is looking to level up over his decent rookie campagin.

Jake Virtanen will serve as one of the scratches on Tuesday night.

There's no mention of an injury, so we have to assume that this is a coach's decision. The 20-year-old hasn't picked up a point in two games this season. Alex Biega and Nikita Tryamkin will also watch the game from the press box.

Tue, Apr 5, 2016 06:04:00 PM

Jake Virtanen has been suspended for two games for his late hit on San Jose's Roman Polak.

The NHL described Virtanen's hit as "late, forceful, blindside check." The league felt this warranted supplemental discipline due to how late it was delivered and its "predatory nature." Virtanen will be eligible to return on April 4. This is Virtanen's first incident of supplemental discipline and Polak was not injured as a result of the hit.
