Among the Pittsburgh Penguins' six Saturday moves: releasing Sergei Gonchar from his PTO.
It's tough not to wonder if this is it for the veteran, as some of his best moments came with the Penguins. There's always a chance someone else will give him a shot, but it seems slim. Oct 3 - 1:12 PM

Sergei Gonchar has agreed to join the Pittsburgh Penguins on a professional tryout contract.

He appeared in 48 games with Montreal and Dallas last season, while collecting 14 points and a plus-6 rating. Pittsburgh has a crowded blueline going into training camp and it will very difficult for Gonchar to make the team.

Sergei Gonchar wants to play one more season in the NHL.

Gonchar has been in the NHL since 1994-95 when he broke in with the Washington Capitals, where he spent the first 10 of his 22 seasons thus far. Gonchar currently ranks 149th all-time in points with 811, which also ranks 16th all-time among defenseman. In addition, Gonchar ranks eighth all-time among Russian born players in the NHL. Now 41 years old, Gonchar is coming off a two-year contract that dinged the cap at $5M per season. He's no longer the point producer from the blue line he used to be, having topped the 30-point plateau just once this decade, but the future Hall of Famer surely has something left to give a team looking to boost their power play.
Jun 2 - 6:11 PM

The Montreal Canadiens have decided to part ways with Sergei Gonchar.

Montreal dealt Travis Moen to the Dallas Stars in November to get Gonchar, but it didn't really work out for the Canadiens. Gonchar had a goal and 13 points in 45 contests with Montreal and spent Montreal's entire playoff run in the press box. He turned 41 in April, so this might be the end of his NHL career.
May 15 - 11:57 AM

The Canadiens will likely ice the same lineup in Game 5 that played in Game 4 against Tampa.

That means that Sergei Gonchar, Mike Weaver, Brian Flynn and Manny Malhotra will all sit in the press box.
May 9 - 9:53 AM

Brian Flynn, Manny Malhotra, Sergei Gonchar and Mike Weaver will be healthy scratches in Game Four against Tampa.

It doesn't appear as though coach Michel Therrien will be shuffling the deck ahead of Montreal's first elimination game of the year. Of the four scratches, only Flynn has been dressed for playoff action in 2015.
May 7 - 5:01 PM

Sergei Gonchar and Mike Weaver will be healthy scratches in Sunday's game against Tampa Bay.

Neither player has been inserted into a playoff game in 2015. The Canadiens played well in game one, but they only managed to beat Ben Bishop once. It's a must-win for Montreal as they can't afford to lose both games on home ice. They will go with Subban, Markov, Petry, Gilbert, Pateryn and Emelin on defense.
May 3 - 4:38 PM

Sergei Gonchar and Mike Weaver will continue to sit in the press box as their Montreal Canadiens take on the Tampa Bay Lightning in Game One on Friday night.

Gonchar and Weaver have been stapled to the press box for the majority of the season in 2015, and there isn't any sign of that changing any time soon.

May 1 - 5:57 PM

Sergei Gonchar didn't attend practice Wednesday because of family reasons.

He hasn't been in the lineup since Apr. 3 and he skated in 48 games with the Canadiens during the regular season. Gonchar also didn't get any playing time in the first round of the postseason.
Apr 29 - 5:20 PM

Coach Therrien has announced that there will not be any lineup changes in Game Three for Montreal on Sunday night against Ottawa.

Montreal leads the series 2-0, so there's no point in trying to fix what ain't broke. This means that defensemen Sergei Gonchar, Greg Pateryn, Mike Weaver and forward Manny Malhotra will be healthy scratches once again.
Apr 19 - 5:51 PM

Defensemen Sergei Gonchar, Greg Pateryn, Mike Weaver and forward Manny Malhotra will be healthy scratches for Game Two against the Ottawa Senators on Friday night.

Suffice it to say, that Gonchar may have the most potential value of the bunch and he's played just once since March 12th. We'd like to give you more details, but the hard truth is that if you don't play, you don't have any value.
Apr 17 - 6:34 PM

Defensemen Sergei Gonchar and Mike Weaver and forward Manny Malhotra will be listed as healthy scratches for Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals series with the Ottawa Senators.

Gonchar is the most notable name of this trio but has not been seeing much game action with the Canadiens over the last month plus. He’s only skated in one game since March 12th and only scored one goal with 13 assists in 48 games overall this season. Weaver and Malhotra both offer limited fantasy potential and shouldn’t be carried on anyone’s daily team.
Apr 15 - 7:16 PM

Sergei Gonchar, Greg Pateryn, Manny Maholtra, and Mike Weaver will each be scratched from Saturday's season finale against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Unfortunately, none of these four players were able to squeeze out much fantasy value this season. This was in large part due to their inability to stay in the lineup. Gonchar, perhaps the most talented of the bunch, for example, has played just once since March 12th and saw just 45 total games with Montreal.

Apr 11 - 5:35 PM

Sergei Gonchar, Manny Maholtra, Greg Pateryn and Mike Weaver will be healthy scratches in Thursday's game against the Detroit Red Wings.

Brian Flynn will take Max Pacioretty (upper-body) spot in the lineup, but that is the only change they will make. Gonchar would normally have a little bit of fantasy upside because he usually sees time on the power play but the other three players aren't point-producers.
Apr 9 - 6:58 PM

Sergei Gonchar, Mike Weaver, and Greg Pateryn were held out of Sunday's tilt with the Florida Panthers.

While Weaver and Pateryn have seen just 46 combined games this season, Gonchar has played just once since March 12th. Gonchar made his name as an offensive catalyst, but it appears that none of these three defenders figure into Coach Therrien's blue line.
