Look for Sergei Gonchar to be plenty motivated when the Canadiens visit Dallas Saturday night.
This will be the first time Gonchar has faced his former club since he was traded to Montreal on November 11th. The veteran defenseman, who has three points since landing with the Habs 11 games ago, will be looking to show the Dallas coaching staff he still has something left in his tank. We'd start Gonchar Saturday night. We always like players who have something to prove in our lineups. Dec 6 - 10:46 AM

Date:

Sergei Gonchar will be in the lineup on Thursday when the Canadiens host Boston.

He practiced on the first power-play unit with Andrei Markov on the point. They were joined by Max Pacioretty, David Desharnais and P.A. Parenteau up front. Gonchar had one assist in three games with the Dallas Stars prior to being traded to Montreal and this will mark his Habs debut.
Nov 13 - 2:11 PM

Sergei Gonchar could slot onto Montreal's top power-play unit alongside P.K. Subban.

"He's made a career out of his work on the power play," coach Michel Therrien said. "We'll see how things play out, but he's definitely a guy with a lot of experience who has always been known for his vision and quick thinking on the power play. The addition of Gonchar will allow us to play with the elements that we have." Tom Gilbert was paired with Subban during Wednesday's practice, but he may have been keeping Gonchar's spot warm if the veteran defender draws into the lineup on Thursday night.
Nov 13 - 10:36 AM

The Dallas Stars will retain 8% of Sergei Gonchar's $5 million annual salary.

Gonchar is set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer, so that's not a long-term commitment for Dallas. The Stars got Travis Moen in the trade.
Nov 11 - 1:29 PM

The Montreal Canadiens have acquired Sergei Gonchar in exchange for Travis Moen.

Gonchar has been limited to just three games this season due to an ankle injury, but he's healthy now. He's not the elite offensive defenseman he once was and we're not sure how much power-play ice time he'll get given that P.K. Subban and Andrei Markov typically consume the vast majority of it among defenseman in Montreal. That being said, he's another veteran presence on a team looking to make a deep playoff run and he'll certainly be worth keeping a very close eye on in the coming days.
Nov 11 - 1:19 PM

Sergei Gonchar was activated from the IL on Tuesday November 4.

He was back in the lineup after missing the first 11 games of the season due an ankle injury. Gonchar logged 12:36 of ice time in the match and he saw some action on the second power-play unit.
Nov 5 - 1:44 AM

The Dallas Stars will probably get Sergei Gonchar (ankle) back on Tuesday.

If everything goes according to plan, Gonchar will play alongside Jamie Oleksiak. Gonchar has missed Dallas' first 11 games of 2014-15.
Nov 4 - 3:09 PM

Sergei Gonchar (ankle) took part in Saturday's morning skate and he's received clearance to return to action.

However, he still needs to work on his conditioning. "It will be a challenge because I am a month behind everyone else," he said. "But I have been through things like this before, and you just have to start playing, and then you catch up." Gonchar should be able to play at some point this week.
Nov 3 - 12:16 PM

Sergei Gonchar (ankle) returned to a regular practice on Monday.

He's making progress towards appearing in his first game of the 2014-15 season, but he isn't expected to be cleared this week. Gonchar suffered a fractured bone in his ankle during training camp.
Oct 27 - 6:54 PM

Sergei Gonchar (ankle) has been skating on his own and he may return to practices once the Stars return from their road trip.

He has been making some progress in his recovery from an ankle injury. Gonchar suffered a fracture before the start of the 2014-15 season.
Oct 23 - 12:51 PM

Sergei Gonchar (ankle) has been placed on the injured reserve list.

Gonchar is expected to be sidelined for at least another two weeks. He had two goals and 22 points in 76 games in 2013-14.
Oct 7 - 6:02 PM

Sergei Gonchar will be sidelined for the next three-to-five weeks because of a fracture in his ankle.

The veteran defender just returned from a laceration in his ear after he took a puck to his head in a scrimmage. Gonchar had two assists and a plus-3 rating in three preseason games, but now he won't be available for the start of the year.

Oct 2 - 6:57 PM

Sergei Gonchar, who had missed some time on the ice due to a laceration of his ear, returned to game action Friday night against Tampa.

He seemed fine after recovering from a puck to the side of the head which cut his ear during practice on Monday. Gonchar was plus two for the evening and was on the ice for 20:04.
Sep 27 - 12:40 PM

Sergei Gonchar took a puck to the head in a scrimmage that will keep him out of Monday's preseason game.

He is listed as day-to-day. Gonchar was hurt late in the session.
Sep 22 - 3:16 PM

Dallas has been unable to move Sergei Gonchar even though the team was reportedly willing to retain half of the veteran defender's $5 million salary.

It makes you wonder why the Stars didn't buy him out when they had the chance. The 40-year-old defender registered two goals and 22 points in 76 games last season. There's a chance that he could have his role reduced this season, as Dallas has plenty of young defensemen itching for NHL playing time. If he loses power-play time then he won't be worth owning at all. Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News believes that the Stars will continue to look to trade Gonchar, while trying to get more out of him this year. That could be a problem if he falls down the depth chart.
