Wade Belak had been depressed before he passed away.
"I think he was taking control of that," Belak's mother said. "He didn't talk about it all the time or a lot." The cause of death has not been released, but Lorraine Belak said that he didn't die of natural causes. A private funeral will be held on Sunday in Nashville. Fri, Sep 2, 2011 03:55:00 PM

Wade Belak's funeral will take place on Sunday in Nashville.

The funeral will be private. For those who wish to give something in Belak's honor, the family has suggested that they make a donation to The Andie and Alex Belak Scholarship Fund. "We are overwhelmed and deeply touched by the outpouring of compassion and support since Wade's passing," Belak's wife, Jennifer said. "Wade was a big man with an even bigger heart. He was a deeply devoted father and husband, a loyal friend and a well-respected athlete. This loss leaves a huge hole in our lives and, as we move forward, we ask that everyone remember Wade's infectious sense of humor, his caring spirit and the joy he brought to his friends, family and fans. The coming days will be very difficult for our family and we respectfully ask that we be allowed to grieve privately."

According to two sources that asked not to be identified, Wade Belak had been suffering from depression.

He took medication to try to treat his mental illness, but had been unwilling to speak about it. Michael Landsberg, who hosts TSN's Off the Record and had known Belak for almost 10 years said it best when he commented, "What we can learn from this is that, if you suffer from depression, even though you may go for help and you may be on medication and you may have a psychiatrist, you need to share the depth of your pain with the people around you. Because if he was walking around saying, 'I'm feeling so awful I could take my life,' if he said that to his wife, she would never have let him come (to Toronto)." His widow, Jennifer, also released a statement of her own on Thursday, thanking everyone for their support and asking "that everyone remember Wade's infectious sense of humor, his caring spirit and the joy he brought to his friends, family and fans."

The NHL and NHLPA released a joint statement to address what steps need to be taken following the tragic deaths of Wade Belak, Rick Rypien and Derek Boogaard during this summer.

"We are committed to examining, in detail, the factors that may have contributed to these events, and to determining whether concrete steps can be taken to enhance player welfare and minimize the likelihood of such events taking place. Our organizations are committed to a thorough evaluation of our existing assistance programs and practices and will make immediate modifications and improvements to the extent they are deemed warranted. It is important to ensure that every reasonable step and precaution is taken to make NHL Players, and all members of the NHL family, aware of the vast resources available to them when they are in need of assistance. We want individuals to feel comfortable seeking help when they need help. NHL Clubs and our fans should know that every avenue will be explored and every option pursued in the furtherance of this objective."

Wade Belak was found dead by police after they reportedly responded to a call that a body was hanging in a room at the tony 1 King West hotel and condo building in Toronto.

The 35-year-old former NHL tough guy was staying there for a rehearsal for the CBC's Battle of the Blades television show. News of his passing has shocked the hockey world. "He was such a bright light, he had a smile on his face every day," said former Maple Leafs Pat Quinn. "The last time I saw him, he was up at TSN to talk about a career change into television. He seemed very, very happy with himself. Certainly, I was delighted to hear that. He was one of those special guys I enjoyed having." He is survived by his wife Jennifer and children Andie and Alex. Our thoughts and prayers are with them and everyone else that are reeling from his passing.

Wade Belak has been discovered dead in Toronto, according to a Nashville Predators spokesman.

The cause of his death is unknown at this time. This summer has already witnessed the losses of tough guys Rick Rypien and Derek Boogaard, so Belak's untimely passing is another tragic event this off-season. Our deepest condolences go out to his friends and family for their loss and we'll keep you posted.

Wade Belak hasn't reported to the minors.

Belak, who was scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent this summer, will continue to be paid by the Predators, but it looks like he probably has played in his last professional game. He intends to stay in Nashville and focus on the broadcasting/business side of hockey.

The Predators don't plan to call Wade Belak back up before the end of the season.

Belak was assigned to the minors on Saturday after clearing waivers. "We made the decision that we're not going to be using him again, which is unfortunate. I don't feel real good about that," GM David Poile said.

Wade Belak served as a healthy scratch for the 15th straight game on Saturday.

The enforcer, formerly a Florida Panther, did not suit up against his old team and has played in only four games this season. On the off-chance that you've been holding on to him in hopes of getting a few penalty minutes, it's time to cut bait.

The Nashville Predators have re-signed Wade Belak to a one-year/$575,000 contract.

The truculent forward will provide the Predators with toughness, but little goal scoring. He's also good in the dressing room, if that is any help in fantasy pools.

Wade Belak will play against the Florida Panthers on Monday.

Belak has been a healthy scratch since February 12th. He managed to work his way back into the Predators lineup because of an injury to Martin Erat. Belak has no fantasy value.

Wade Belak was a healthy scratch on Thursday for the 11th consecutive game.

Belak is the consummate team player as he does not complain of lack of ice time. "I try to keep everybody loose," Belak said. "We have a good time in here. I think that's probably the reason why we've done so well this year is because everyone really gets along and we enjoy each other's company. If I can help that and be a good influence on some of the guys - guys like a Cal O'Reilly, who's been sitting out - and keep them positive. They're going to have a lot of opportunity in their career to be playing. So for me, I'm just happy to be a part of it any way I can." Belak is a good candidate for fantasy teams, if cheerleading is a category.

Wade Belak (foot) returned to action on Saturday for Nashville.

He racked up 10 minutes in penalties, as he dropped the gloves twice with Sharks' enforcer Jody Shelley, despite playing just 1:27 of ice time in the contest. It was Belak's first game since Jan. 26 as he had been suffering from a foot injury.
