GM Joe Nieuwendyk said Thursday that the search for a new head coach has been halted by the Stars' quest to find an owner.

"We are sort of on hold in a lot of different areas because of the ownership situation," said Nieuwendyk. "We have a plan for the next couple of weeks, but we'll form our timeline for the coach search at that time. We really haven't even started yet." Vancouver businessman Tom Gaglardi is still in the picture to purchase the club, while Texas Stars coach Glen Gulutzan and Montreal assistant bench boss Kirk Muller could be candidates to fill the team's head coaching position.

Tony Tavares has officially been named the interim president of the Dallas Stars while they search for a new ownership group.

"I do think that if a potential buyer sees (progress in ticket sales) and sees things turning around, then it does make it more attractive to them. If they can see the turn, then they will realize it is something that can happen quickly," Tavares said. "We're going to earn back people's confidence, we're going to do things right. And when a new owner is announced, I expect we'll get another boost from that. And I think that would be something that would be very attractive to someone who is trying to buy this team." He appears to be very capable of handling the team in the meantime.

The Stars hired former NHL goalie Andy Moog to serve as an assistant coach this season.

Moog worked as the team's goalie consultant last campaign, but will have increased responsibilities in 2009-10. Mike Valley was named as the new goalie coach for Dallas as well.

Stars' general manager Joe Nieuwendyk is trying to change the culture of the team this season.

"Am I looking for as much accountability as I can get from the players and everyone involved? I think that's fair," he said. "I feel just as competitive now as I did when I was a player, so I don't think that I've changed much." The Stars also have a new coach in Marc Crawford this campaign and the team is ready to rebound after a troubled 2008-09 year. "It's exciting," said forward Steve Ott. "You look around the room and see the talent, and you definitely feel we're a playoff team. And then you listen to the coaches and you see the hunger, and you feel like the sky's the limit."

New Stars' GM Joe Nieuwendyk met with the media on Monday to discuss his future plans with the club.

Nieuwendyk said he wants to build the team through the draft and avoid locking up veteran players to long-term deals with the salary cap looming over his head. "I don't see it as a way of building," he said. "What normally happens is you end up overspending on Day 1. And I think a lot of teams have fallen into that over the years. With all due respect, our team was one of them. You have to be careful."

It is being reported that Joe Nieuwendyk will be named the new general manager of the Dallas Stars on Monday.

Nieuwendyk had been serving as a Special Assistant to the General Manager with the Toronto Maple Leafs, but appears to be heading back to Dallas. A news conference is scheduled for Monday afternoon. Current co-GMs Brett Hull and Les Jackson have been given different jobs within the organization. Hull will be the team's Executive Vice President and Alternative Governor, while Jackson will return as the team's Director of Scouting and Player Development.

It is being reported that Joe Nieuwendyk will meet with Maple Leaf management this week.

It has been rumored for a few months now that the Leafs want to bring Nieuwendyk into their management fold. They were denied permission to speak with the former player until his managerial contract with the Florida Panthers expired on June 30. An announcement could come sometime this week.

The Florida Panthers have denied the Leafs permission to speak to Joe Nieuwendyk.

Toronto can still contact Nieuwendyk on July 1st when his contract with the Panthers expires. The Leafs are hoping to bring in Nieuwendyk to work with interim GM Cliff Fletcher and possibly former Vancouver GM Dave Nonis. The Panthers are just the latest in a long line of teams to deny the Leafs access to their people. The Detroit Red Wings and San Jose Sharks denied the Leafs permission to talk to their respective General Managers.

Joe Nieuwendyk resigned from his front office position with the Florida Panthers on Wednesday.

Nieuwendyk had served as a special consultant to coach and GM Jacques Martin for the past year, but he has decided to leave the organization and also take himself out of the running for the recently vacated head coaching position. With Martin having relinquished his coaching duties, and having yet to decide on whether to return as even the GM, there was some speculation that Nieuwendyk could have been a candidate to move into a coaching role. "I'm going to step back and decide what me and the wife are going to do," said Nieuwendyk, who retired early last season because of chronic back problems.

Joe Nieuwendyk visited his old team over the weekend, but if general manager and head coach Jacques Martin had it his way, Joe would not have left.

"I would really like Joe to be part of the organization, but I respect that he needs to take some time and concentrate on his family," said Martin. He added, "He may do some special-assignment stuff for us in the near future when he feels he can be available. I haven't determined anything, but I've left the door open for him if he's interested". Nieuwendyk had a phenomenal career so it is no wonder that Martin would want his expertise.

Joe Nieuwendyk has been forced to retire due to his ongoing back problems.

"I have the reached the stage where structurally my back isn't going to get any better. It's not the way I intended it, but I have to be realistic as well, " Nieuwendyk said. Nieuwendyk retires after playing in 1257 career games and accumulating 564 goals and 1126 points. He won three Stanley Cups with three different teams; Calgary (1989), Dallas (1999) and New Jersey (2003).

Joe Nieuwendyk saw a back specialist in Cleveland last week, but there still is not any news on when he will be available to return to the Panthers' lineup.

Nieuwendyk has played in only fifteen of the Panthers' twenty-nine games this season. "It's probably too early to say," Coach Jacques Martin said. "We'll wait and see how he feels this week and, hopefully, there's some improvement."
