Sami Kapanen has announced his retirement from the NHL.
The diminutive winger played 12 seasons in the NHL, including four of them with the Philadelphia Flyers. He was relegated to fourth line duty this year for the Flyers, which probably figured in his decision to hang up his skates. Kapanen will play for KalPa Kuopio, of the Finnish Elite League, next campaign. He co-owns the team and still feels he can play hockey for at least one more year. Kapanen played in 831 career games, amassing 189 goals and 458 points. We wish you well, Sami. Wed, Jun 4, 2008 08:06:00 AM

Sami Kapanen is apparently no longer a member of the Philadelphia Flyers.

He has returned to his native Finland to play for a team he co-owns. "It's a decision I was thinking about for a while and together with the Philadelphia Flyers, we took the decision to terminate the contract," Kapanen said to a Finnish newspaper. When asked to comment on the situation general manager Paul Holmgren and coach John Stevens said they were not aware of his intentions. Holmgren is scheduled to talk with Kapanen on Tuesday. He still has one year remaining on his current deal and hopefully this situation will become clearer after their discussions.

Kapanen played nearly 10 minutes on the fourth line and played very well on the penalty kill. He will be a small, but important key to the Flyers success or failure against the Capitals.

The Philadelphia Flyers and head coach John Stevens have agreed in principle to a one-year contract extension.

Stevens has led the Flyers to a respectable 16-13-3 record this season, a vast improvement from last year's abomination, but has received much more notoriety for seemingly recreating a "Broad Street Bullies" atmosphere in Philly. He has seen five of his players suspended for a combined total of 52 games in this season alone, and in his last season with the club's AHL affiliate (2005-06) his squad had an league-high of 2,380 PIMs. Looks like we can expect another year of rough and tough hockey in the city of brotherly love.

Sami Kapanen has scored three goals in as many games going into tonight's tilt with Carolina, his former team, and is looking to make it four consecutive games with a goal.

The penalty-killing machine has been seeing between 15:35 and 17:00 minutes of ice-time over those last three games and seems to have developed some nice chemistry with former first-round pick R.J. Umberger. His best offensive years seem well behind him, but his play is starting to spark recollections of his five-year stretch with Carolina when he was a legitimate scoring threat and netted 121 goals over that span. He still has that blinding speed and, therefore, always has a chance to find some scoring opportunities that others cannot.
