Suddenly former New York Rangers backup goalie Martin Biron announced his retirement from the NHL on Twitter Sunday.
He decided to "move on to a new chapter" of his life. One can debate whether he fulfilled his promise - the Buffalo Sabres drafted him 16th overall in 1995 - but he certainly had a lengthy NHL career. In his travels with Buffalo (about a decade), Philadelphia and the Rangers (about three seasons each) and the Islanders (29 games in 2009-10), the 36-year-old logged 508 regular season contests and played in 23 postseason games, most recently with Philly in 2008-09. Martin Biron will make a decision regarding his future this weekend.

Biron can either play for AHL Hartford in the hopes of working his way back into the NHL or opt to retire. If he chooses the latter, he will finish with 230 wins, a 2.61 GAA, and .910 save percentage over 508 NHL games.

Martin Biron has been assigned to AHL Hartford after clearing waivers Tuesday.

He is going to take some time to decide what comes next for himself now. Biron can either report to New York's minor-league affiliate or retire because going overseas to play isn't an option at this point.

Martin Biron was surprised by the New York Rangers' decision to put him on waivers.

Biron isn't sure what he would like the next step to be, but the Rangers will presumably send him to the minors if he goes unclaimed. "I'll talk to the family and get some advice from many different people and I'll see what comes out of it," Biron said. He has a 7.61 GAA and .763 save percentage in two games this season.

The New York Rangers have placed backup goalie Martin Biron on waivers.

In two appearances with the Rangers this season, Biron has allowed nine goals on 38 shots for a 0-1-0 record, a .763 save percentage and a 7.61 goals-against average. If Biron gets claimed then New York could call up Cam Talbot from the AHL or sign another goaltender like Johan Hedberg, who attended the Blueshirt's camp on a professional tryout. He might be sent down to the minors if he doesn't get picked up by another team.

Martin Biron was yanked after two periods of the Rangers' 5-3 loss to the Blues on Saturday night.

This is how the season is going for the Rangers: When parts of their game are clicking, every defensive breakdown winds up in the back of the net and their goalies can't make a big stop. Biron was awful in the second period -- the best period of the year for the rest of his team -- as he allowed three goals on five shots and sapped the Rangers of any momentum. In total, he gave up four goals on 17 shots in his first start of the season. Henrik Lundqvist made 16 of 17 saves in relief in the third period.

Martin Biron has something to prove Saturday night against the Blues.

Biron relieved Henrik Lundqvist against the Sharks, but he also was abysmal, allowing five goals on 21 shots. The Bergen Record's Andrew Gross believes that coach Alain Vigneault is not "sold" on Biron as Lundqvist's backup. The bench boss wants someone he can start at least 20 times this year and Biron needs to show him he can be trusted.

Martin Biron will play between the pipes on Saturday against the St. Louis Blues.

It will be Biron's first start of the season, but he made his season debut on Tuesday when Henrik Lundqvist was yanked during the Rangers' 9-2 defeat. Biron ended up allowing five goals on 21 shots in that contest. The Rangers have struggled terribly lately, so this might be a good time to give Lundqvist a game off to regroup.

Martin Biron stopped all six shots he faced in 31:22 minutes worth of playing time on Tuesday.

Biron is signed to a one-way contract that comes with a $1.3 million annual cap hit, but the Rangers brought in Johan Hedberg on a tryout agreement to battle for the backup job. Still, Biron shrugged the move off as nothing new. "I've always had to fight for a job in camp or for a new contract every couple of years, so I don’t feel that there’s any difference now," said Biron. "It seems like it’s a cycle I go through every two or three years. It’s the business."

As far as Rangers coach Alain Vigneault is concerned, there's a competition for the Rangers' backup goaltender job.

Martin Biron has a season left on his contract and comes with a $1.3 million cap hit, but the Rangers also invited Johan Hedberg to training camp. The Rangers are close to the cap ceiling, so if Hedberg was willing to agree to a contract cheaper than Biron's, that would be a huge plus in his favor. That being said, moving Biron's contract wouldn't be easy. The new CBA also makes it less appealing from a cap perspective for the Rangers to simply sign Hedberg and then send Biron to the AHL.

Martin Biron (personal) has rejoined the New York Rangers as expected.

Biron is the favorite to enter the 2013-14 campaign as the Rangers' backup goaltender, but his position with the team is a little less certain after they invited Johan Hedberg to attend their training camp on a tryout basis. Biron had a 2.32 GAA and .917 save percentage in six games last season.

Martin Biron is slated to rejoin the New York Rangers on Friday.

He is scheduled to arrive back in town today after missing the start of training camp to attend to a personal matter.

Rangers coach Alain Vigneault didn't want to go into detail about Martin Biron's absence from training camp due to a personal matter.

"When he does come back, he'll address it with you in the matter that he sees fit," Vigneault said. That stance is to be expected. Biron might return Thursday after missing Wednesday, but his absence gained a little more intrigue because of the Rangers' decision to invite goaltender Johan Hedberg to their camp on a professional tryout offer.

Martin Biron isn't with the New York Rangers on Wednesday due to a personal matter.

Preseason games haven't even started yet, so Biron missing a day isn't that big of a deal. He's expected to return as soon as Thursday.

We anticipate that Martin Biron will be in goal Saturday against Carolina.

Henrik Lundqvist will likely sit out due to a slight hamstring pull. Check back with us closer to game time for confirmation of the Rangers' starting netminder for Saturday's contest.
