The Toronto Maple Leafs have finally finished paying off Darcy Tucker, as the gritty winger's annual $1 million buyout payments are off the books as of this summer.
The Leafs bought out the feisty winger in 2008 at a cost of $6 million over the next six years as penalty for terminating his contract three years prematurely. Tucker went on to play for Colorado and eventually retire in 2010. The 39 year old played eight productive seasons in Toronto as was an essential part of the Leafs' playoff runs between 1999-2004. Toronto gains a little more financial flexibility by not having to send an annual payout to an old player anymore. Jun 18 - 8:53 PM

Darcy Tucker has announced his retirement after 15 seasons in the NHL.

"It was one of those things that all players agonize over a bit," Tucker said. "Through the summer and working out, figuring out what I want to do and where I want to go, if it was going to happen at all, nothing came across the plate that was overly intriguing for me. The only thing that would have kept me to try to play was try to win the Stanley Cup before I retired, but that wasn't going to come to pass, so I buckled down and made the decision." Tucker had 215 goals, 476 points, and 1,410 penalty minutes in 970 games with the Montreal Canadiens, Tampa Bay Lightning, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Colorado Avalanche.

Darcy Tucker says that he has been feeling better lately.

Tucker suffered a concussion on Oct. 23 when Tuomo Ruutu of the Hurricanes hit him from behind into the boards. "I felt like I was in a bit of a fog," Tucker said about most of his season. "It seemed like the season has been in three pieces for me. The last three weeks or so, things have felt a lot better, and I think I've been doing some things to help." Tucker potted his 10th goal of the season on Friday. His relevancy in fantasy terms is negligible at this stage of his career.

Darcy Tucker spent Sunday's game in the press box.

With Matt Hendricks healthy, coach Joe Sacco decided to make Tucker the odd man out. "It's the lineup that tonight I feel gives us the best chance to win," Sacco said. "I like Matt Hendricks' energy on that fourth line, and I think that with Stephane Yelle back, a guy who's a key member of our penalty killing unit and at taking faceoffs, I just feel it's the right decision." Tucker has 21 points and 45 penalty minutes in 67 games this season.

Darcy Tucker will be in the Colorado lineup on Saturday after sitting out one game due to suspension.

Tucker missed Wedensday's game as the NHL saw fit to suspend him for excessive physical contact for his hit on the Kings Matt Greene. "It was tough for the league," Tucker said. "He was losing his balance, and when he fell down, I fell on top of him. It was quite a collision. It was an unfortunate thing, it happened, and I'll take my one game and move on." Tucker is eligible to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1. He has seven goals and 20 points this season and at age 35, he may have to settle for a lot less than the $2.3 million he is receiving this season.
