Ruslan Salei's tragic death has been confirmed by the Belarus Hockey Federation as well as Belarusian news agencies.
A plane carrying the KHL team Lokomotiv Yaroslavl to their season opener crash on Wednesday. Of the 45 people on board, only two were reported as having survived the crash. At first there were conflicting reports as to whether Salei, who was committed to playing with Lokomotiv Yaroslavl this season, was on the plane, but unfortunately he was one of the passengers. We would like to extend our condolences to his family and friends. Wed, Sep 7, 2011 02:04:00 PM

Ruslan Salei has signed a one year deal with Lokomotiv Yaroslavl of the KHL.

No financial terms were announced. Salei played with the Red Wings last season but did not get any interest from another NHL team when he became a free agent on July 1. His new head coach in Russia is Brad McCrimmon who was an assistant coach with the Red Wings the last three seasons. Look for Salei to play the year out in Russia and try to return to the NHL the following season.

Ruslan Salei will become an unrestricted free agent on July 1st, but he might still end up signing with Detroit.

The Red Wings don't plan to offer him a contract before July, but they haven't completely ruled out the possibility of reaching out to him later if the circumstances are right. Detroit's defensive situation is significantly better now that they've re-signed Nicklas Lidstrom, but they still need to fill the big void left by the retirement of blueliner Brian Rafalski.

Ruslan Salei returned to practice on Wednesday after missing Tuesday's practice with a 'boo-boo'.

At least that's what coach Mike Babcock called it. Salei will be in the lineup for Game 1 Friday in San Jose. The defenseman has little offensive capabilities but is solid defensively.

Ruslan Salei missed practice on Tuesday.

Coach Mike Babcock said that Salei had a 'boo-boo'. Salei nodded when asked if he would be ready for Round 2 so since the Rotoworld injury list does not include a 'boo-boo', let's just say he missed yesterday's practice with an undisclosed injury.

Ruslan Salei is expected to suit up as Detroit's seventh defenseman for Monday's contest against Pittsburgh.

With forwards Pavel Datsyuk (lower body), Johan Franzen (groin) and Jiri Hudler (shoulder, neck, fever) not expected to play, coach Mike Babcock said Salei might see some shifts up front as well if they need him to as their 12th forward. Detroit is in a bind because they cannot recall a player from the minors. Salei hasn't played since Mar. 12 and Monday's practice was his first in a week.

Ruslan Salei has returned to Detroit's lineup after leaving to be with his wife for the birth of their child.

Salei hasn't taken part in a team practice in about a week, so he might be a healthy scratch on Monday. He has 10 points and 42 penalty minutes in 67 games in 2010-11.

Ruslan Salei might be away from the team for another day or two after his wife gave birth to Ava Ruslanova Salei on Wednesday.

Consider him day-to-day for now. We would also like to extend our congratulations to Salei's family.

Salei will stay with her as she is due to deliver next week. It will be the couple's third child. Look for Doug Janik to remain with the Red Wings while Salei is in sunny California.

Ruslan Salei was back in the Detroit lineup on Monday after getting an extra day off to spend with his family on Sunday.

Salei's family is in California and coach Mike Babcock gave the defenseman an extra day to spend with the family over the Christmas break. He played 22:43 minutes with a minus-one rating. The solid defensive defenseman has six assists in 35 games thus far. His fantasy value is limited at best.

The Detroit Red Wings are thrilled to have veteran Ruslan Salei on their blueline.

The Red Wings signed Salei for $750,000 with an extra $350,000 available in bonuses. "I said right away when we got him, the biggest coup that people don't talk about is Rusty Salei," coach Mike Babcock said. "Everyone talks about Hudler and Modano. You just wait to see how good Salei is. That's the biggest coup for us in the off-season, in my opinion." Salei will be the Red Wings fifth defenseman and partner Jonathan Ericsson on the third unit. He is valuable on the ice but not in fantasy hockey.
