Bryan Berard is ready to put a disappointing season with the New York Islanders behind him and make a solid contribution for the Philadelphia Flyers.

Berard feels fully recovered from the back injuries he suffered a couple of years ago when he was playing with the Columbus Blue Jackets. Last season, Berard was invited to the Islanders training camp and made the team putting up 22 points but was an ugly minus-17 rating. Poolies should keep an eye on Berard if he makes the Flyers. They are a much better hockey team than the Islanders and have a need for defencemen so Berard should see an increase in minutes if he survives the final cuts.

The Philadelphia Flyers have invited defenseman Bryan Berard to training camp.

"Bryan has been around a number of years now (and) he has been a good defenceman for quite some time," general manager Paul Holmgren said. "I'm excited about Bryan's willingness to come here on a tryout. It will certainly pick up the competition level of what is going to take place in training camp." Berard recorded 22 points and a minus-17 plus/minus rating in 54 games with the Islanders last season. He has limited fantasy value at this time, but can score on the power play if given a chance.

Bryan Berard was a healthy scratch on Saturday

This has been happening much too much this season. It is time to look elsewhere for offensive production from a defenseman.

Bryan Berard was benched in the second period for taking a bad penalty.

Coach Ted Nolan was displeased with his lazy play and sat him on the bench for the rest of the game. Berard has been a healthy scratch at times this season and cannot get his game untracked. With only two goals and five points in 18 games, he is not worth a fantasy roster spot.

Bryan Berard returned to the lineup on Thursday.

Coach Ted Nolan decided to sit forward Sean Bergenheim and go with seven defensemen. Berard was held off the score sheet in his return. It looks like he could be in and out of the lineup, just like Marc-Andre Bergeron for the foreseeable future.

Bryan Berard was a healthy scratch against the Senators on Wednesday.

The veteran defender seems to be rotating in and out of the lineup with Marc-Andre Bergeron. Both are offensive defensemen that struggle with the defensive aspect of the game. When he plays, Berard does have decent fantasy value as he is on the top power-play unit. However, his inconsistent playing time is not worth the headache.

Bryan Berard may return from a groin injury by Thursday.

Coach Ted Nolan admitted that they could use Berard's skills on the power-play, "If Bryan is cleared to play, he'll be back. We need a power-play guy. We'll sleep on it and make the decision the next day." Either way, Berard is close to returning and will resume his spot on the power-play, making a potential fantasy sleeper. He had two goals and four points in five games prior to the injury.
