Tomas Holmstrom made his retirement official on Tuesday.
"It wasn't an easy decision, but it is the right one," said Holmstrom. "Some people may think me crazy for all of those years of taking cross-checking to my neck, my head, to my back and having my teammates shooting hundred mph pucks at me — and at the net sometimes, too. But I had the greatest job in the world. Now, it's time to move on." Holmstrom finished his career with 243 goals, 530 points, and 769 penalty minutes in 1,026 career games. Tomas Holmstrom is expected to announce his retirement on Tuesday.

The Detroit Red Wings have called a news conference for 4:30 p.m. ET to make the announcement. Holmstrom won four Stanley Cups with the Red Wings in 15 seasons with the team.

The Detroit Red Wings want to hold a press conference at the Joe Louis Arena, but it's booked through Tuesday. Holmstrom spent his entire NHL career with the Detroit Red Wings and ranks sixth in franchise history with 1,026 games.

Although nothing is official, Tomas Holmstrom is expected to retire before the start of the Detroit Red Wings' training camp.

Detroit GM Ken Holland has extended an invitation to Holmstrom to attend the Wings' camp if he so desires. However, it's not clear if Holland would be interested in signing the soon-to-be 40-year-old at this time. If Holmstrom decides he doesn't want to retire, he might be able to earn a spot as a bottom-six forward.

Tomas Holmstrom still hasn't retired and Detroit GM Ken Holland said that he is welcome at training camp if he so desires.

Holmstrom turns 40 in 16 days but still may want to return for one more season. He is a bottom six forward at best at this time but still can contribute in front of the net, causing havoc, on the power play. Stay tuned.

Holmstrom, who is an unrestricted free agent, is considering retiring. "I will take my time," Holmstrom said. It's not clear if the Detroit Red Wings will re-sign him if Holmstrom decides to extend his career. However, Holmstrom has already specified that he's not looking to sign with any other club.

Tomas Holmstrom is apparently leaning toward playing another season and he would like that to be with the Detroit Red Wings.

"We'll see, though," said Holmstrom. "My knees are feeling good right now but I've had trouble with them (during the past few seasons)." Detroit GM Ken Holland said that he wants to hold off any decisions on the matter until after free agency begins on July 1 and explore some other options first.

Cash is certainly not an issue for the franchise. For Holmstrom it comes to down to whether he has the energy to return for another season while the Wings need to see how things shape up with potential trades and free agency.

The Red Wings will hold off making a decision on Tomas Holmstrom's future until July.

The 39-year-old has been debating playing another year or retiring. If he returns, he will do so with the Wings and he will do so in a power-play/fourth-line role. "They're going to decide [in the] beginning of July what's going to happen," Holmstrom said. The forward had 11 goals and 24 points last season, his 15th in the NHL.

Now that Nicklas Lidstrom has retired, Tomas Holmstrom may also decide to call it quits.

He has been debating for the last month whether he should return for the 2012-13 season. The Wings have not indicated if they will re-sign Holmstrom, so if he does want to continue his NHL career, it may be with another team..However, with Lidstrom leading the way, Holmstrom may feel it best he retire a Red Wing. Stay tuned.
