Josh Green will miss a month of AHL action due to a rib injury suffered on Friday.

"I was going around somebody and felt something pop," Green said. "It might be a cartilage problem; no break, but it’s very painful. "I can’t get comfortable when I’m sleeping at all." Green played four shifts with stars Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Jordan Eberle on the left side. His spot will be taken over by Teemu Hartikainen for now.

Josh Green suffered a rib injury in the first period and did not return.

The captain of the Oklahoma City Barons got the plum assignment of playing alongside Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Jordan Eberle, but that did not last long. He was replaced by Teemu Hartikainen and Magnus Paajarvi who alternated between the Oilers outstanding forwards. No word yet on the severity of the rib injury to Green who is not expected to play much, if at all, in the NHL this season.

Forward Josh Green, who got into seven Oilers’ games last year when injuries cropped up on the Edmonton roster, has signed an AHL contract with the OKCity Barons.

Green, who has played 386 AHL games and 341 in the NHL over his 14-year pro career, had two points (goal, assist) averaging almost 12 minutes a game in his NHL stint. By signing only an AHL deal, however, he can’t come up to the Oilers this season unless they rework his contract.

Edmonton coach Tom Renney is pleased with the play of Josh Green since his callup on Tuesday.

Renney thought Green played well on Tuesday even though the Oilers lost 4-3 to Chicago with Green being a minus-four. "He was better than dash-four (minus four) as far as I’m concerned," Renney said. "He’s a big, strong centreman, he can play any one of the forward positions. He understands the game well, he’s got good hockey IQ. He’s got great experience in the game at different levels. This is a guy that can really help us." For the record, Green was even last night.

Josh Green is projected to start the season in AHL Oklahoma City, but he could be one of the first call ups if there's an injury.

"I still feel like I can play at a pretty high level and I do feel I’m in better shape now than I was when I was younger because I know a little bit more about taking care of myself and doing the right things away from the ice," Green said. "I know I’m a depth signing and, hopefully, I can provide some leadership for the young players in the organization. Just help anyway I can." Green must have a ton of experiences to share with the young players. He has played on eight different NHL teams, several different AHL squads, and he's spent a couple seasons in Europe.
