Bryce Salvador believes there’s a captain within the Devils’ core group.
New general manager Ray Shero said the Devils could go without one this season. However, their former captain thinks the team needs to pick one before the season starts."In my opinion the team needs a new captain, and there's a great core of guys in there," Salvador said. Salvador would not tip his hand as to who he would choose. Sun, Sep 6, 2015 10:44:00 AM

Although Bryce Salvador will still be involved with the New Jersey Devils after announcing his retirement, it's not clear what his title will be.

Salvador isn't particularly concerned about that though. "I'm going to be involved and I'm excited about that," Salvador said. "I'm not really one of those guys that needs a title or anything official. I'm just excited that I'm going to have an ongoing relationship with the Devils." That being said, he is interested in being involved in management down the road.

Bryce Salvador has announced that he is ending his playing career.

Salvador will continue to work with the Devils as well as other hockey organizations in New Jersey in the hopes of being "an example for young players and spread access to the game for everyone." The 39-year-old defenseman had 24 goals and 110 points in 786 career games with the St. Louis Blues and New Jersey Devils. Along the way he was a major contributor in the Devils' 2012 run to the Stanley Cup Final as he recorded 14 points in 24 playoff contests and averaged 22:24 minutes per game.

Bryce Salvador is likely to announce his retirement this week.

"We'll probably have some news later in the week on Bryce and we'll kind of see what direction he is going," Devils GM Ray Shero said. "I don't anticipate this will be a situation that's ongoing for a lot longer one way or the other. I anticipate that relatively soon there will be some sort of information." Salvador has spent the summer as an unrestricted free agent and the Devils are unlikely to re-sign him. It is possible that they would offer him a professional tryout though. Of course, that would be assuming that he has recovered from the back injury that limited him to 15 games last season. He's 39 years old.

Bryce Salvador met with Devils GM Ray Shero last week.

He is recovering from a bulging disc and nerve damage in his back that kept him out for the final 67 games of the 2014-15 season. Salvador said that there's "nothing new to report" on his plans for playing in the upcoming campaign. He intends to wait until the end of the summer to decide on his status.

Bryce Salvador (back) will decide if he will try to play next season at the end of the summer.

He is still recovering from a bulging disc and nerve damage in his back, which limited him to 15 appearances last year. Salvador is eligible for unrestricted free agency in July.

There's a good chance that Bryce Salvador will attend the Devils' training camp on a tryout basis before coming to a decision about his future.

Salvador was limited to 15 contests in 2014-15 due to a bulging disc in his back. At this point he's able to skate and train, but at the age of 39 years old, a comeback isn't guaranteed. In addition to his injury issues, he's also dealing with a family issue that could prove to be a factor. "Right now, there's just so much going on in my life in terms of a lot of things, personal things with my family," Salvador said. "So, I'm just going to see how things go and see where you are come August or September. I'm not putting any pressure on anything or anybody." Keep in mind that the Devils have a promising young core of defensemen so while we imagine they would readily agree to add Salvador to their training camp roster as a tryout, there's a good chance that they won't offer him a contract.

Bryce Salvador, who missed most of the 2014-15 campaign with a back injury, wants to play next season.

Salvador had two assists in just 15 games this season and hasn't played since Nov. 10. "I'm to the point where I'm active again and I've been able to start rehab. I've been doing some rehab over the last several months. So we're just kind of playing it by ear, seeing if it gets back to the point where I'm able to play with it," Salvador said. Even if he does get to the point where he can play again though, he might not end up doing so. At the age of 39, he's set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer. For their part, the Devils GM Lou Lamoriello isn't revealing whether he would be interested in re-signing Salvador.

Devils GM and interim coach Lou Lamoriello hasn't considered moving the captaincy from Bryce Salvador after the now 39-year-old suffered what has proven to be a season-ending back injury.

It's something the Devils will likely deal with over the summer or 2015 training camp though. That's because Salvador is set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer and it seems unlikely for New Jersey to retain his services after Salvador was limited to 94 games over his last three seasons.

Bryce Salvador (back) is traveling with the Devils for their three-game road trip, but he's not expected to return before its conclusion.

Salvador might be able to play before the end of the 2014-15 campaign, but it's unlikely. Given that he's 39 years old and this is the final season of his contract, it's unfortunately possible that he's already played in his last NHL game.

Bryce Salvador (back) might play again this season, but the odds are stacked against him.

Salvador has been participating in off-ice workouts, but he hasn't resumed skating yet. Devils GM and interim coach Lou Lamoriello consequently described the chances of Salvador returning before the 2014-15 campaign ends as "very, very remote." Salvador, who hasn't played since Nov. 10, has two assists in 15 games in 2014-15.

Bryce Salvador (back) has resumed working out off the ice.

The Devils have 25 games left this season and Salvador still hopes to return before the year is done. "That's the hope, but I can't answer that question," Lou Lamoriello said. "He has not been skating yet, but he's working out." Salvador has been out of action since Nov. 10 with a back injury.
Wed, Feb 18, 2015 03:25:00 PM

Bryce Salvador has been sidelined since Nov. 10 because of a back injury.

"He's under doctor's care with his back and it's just a case of when they feel he has the strength to come (back)," GM and interim coach Lou Lamoriello said. "I think it's going to be sooner than later. It's not going to be that long." Salvador has two assists in 15 games this season.

Bryce Salvador (lower body) has yet to start skating after being injured on November 10.

The Devils and Salvador are silent on what is ailing the defenseman and he has missed the last 31 games. "It's hard to explain," GM Lou Lamoriello said when asked about the injury that Salvador sustained. "With the style he plays, until he gets clearance from the doctors, he cannot practice." At age 38, you have to wonder if the blueliner's career is over.
Sun, Jan 18, 2015 08:41:00 AM

Bryce Salvador (lower body) said he is making progress.

However, he hasn't played since Nov. 10 and he isn't skating yet, so his return doesn't appear to imminent.
