Matt Cooke has been playing through an injury.

"It's a best-case scenario for him to just be able to play and not get on the ice two skates in a day," coach Dan Bylsma said after Cooke skipped Tuesday's morning skate prior to suiting up against the Canadiens. "Yup, he's playing with an injury, or is hurt a little bit, but he's been 100 percent when he's played." He has been just an occasional participant at practices since he blocked a shot March 16 against the New York Rangers. Cooke has 15 points, 69 hits and 28 penalty minutes in 34 games this season.

Matt Cooke is a "game-time" decision for Sunday afternoon's contest.

Cooke left Saturday's contest against the New York Rangers after blocking a shot. He did return later on but in a limited fashion.

Matt Cooke choose not to fire back at Ottawa Senators owner Eugene Melnyk, who suggested that Cooke doesn't deserve to be in the NHL.

Cooke's skate sliced Senators' star defenseman Erik Karlsson's Achilles tendon on Wednesday, but the NHL didn't punish Cooke because they couldn't determine intent. Still, Cooke has been punished by the league before and while some would argue he's reformed, Melnyk thinks he "belongs somewhere where the goons play." Cooke responded by saying, "I'm sorry Mr. Melnyk feels that way. I understand the position he's in, and it's not easy."

The Ottawa Sun's Don Brennan penned a column entitled "Pittsburgh Penguins forward Matt Cooke must pay for injuring Erik Karlsson."

Brennan is incredulous over the fact that Cooke wasn't penalized (or suspended) for the move on Karlsson that severed his Achilles tendon. Brennan says "it's not like Cooke is getting away with murder, but close" and that Cooke was "criminally careless." In the end, he says, he doesn't buy that Cooke has reformed. "Once a dirty player, always a dirty player."

Matt Cooke won't face a hearing or any supplemental discipline for slicing the Achilles tendon of Ottawa's Erik Karlsson during Wednesday night's game.

Cooke called the play "a complete accident" and the league apparently feels the same way. Karlsson will require surgery and is out indefinitely. Cooke turned over a new leaf last season and he has carried over a much more disciplined style into this season, so past criticisms of his conduct or reputation aren't as warranted as they used to be.

Matt Cooke doesn't think this lockout is impacting him more mentally than the last one, despite the fact that he has less of his career ahead of him.

"I think if you focus on that, you're setting yourself up for disappointment," Cooke said. "I'm one of 700 guys [in the NHL], but I also believe in certain things, as does everyone else. That's the biggest difference this time -- we're all on the same page and we all believe that certain things are important to us. Moving forward, we need to have those things. Regardless of whether I was 23 or 34, it's the same." Cookie turned 34 in September and 2012-13 might be the second season he's lost due to a lockout. He was set to make $1.25 million this season before becoming an unrestricted free agent this summer.

Matt Cooke returned to the ice Monday at Southpointe after he was clipped by Sidney Crosby's stick last Friday.

He had a large Band-Aid on his forehead and jokingly refuted claims that Crosby helped patch up the wound. "I should correct previous reports in the paper that he had anything to do with aiding or fixing the cut," Cooke said, smiling. "Because he did absolutely nothing except for laugh."

Matt Cooke left the ice of the Penguin players' informal workout with a gash on his forehead.

As there are no trainers or doctors at the arena for these informal practices, star Sidney Crosby played doctor and helped Cooke put gauze on his forehead to stop the bleeding. Cooke is expected to be fine.

Matt Cooke on Friday expects the NHL to cancel more regular-season games, including the Winter Classic.

The NHL insisted Thursday was the deadline to save the full, 82-game season, and Cooke believes the league will wipe out a big chunk of games and withdraw its latest offer. It's unclear if the league would nix over two months' worth, but regardless, even if it did, the two sides could reach an agreement before then, meaning hockey could still be played, even if it's an abbreviated campaign. For what it's worth, Cooke and Craig Adams do think hockey will be played by Thanksgiving.

Matt Cooke is spending more time with his family during the lockout.

"I've been able to be involved in my kids' sports more than I have in the past. I think that means a lot to them and it means a lot to me to be able to enjoy that," Cooke said. "I've tried not to think about what could have been or what should have been and instead have enjoyed the moments I'm having with my family." Cooke also went to Sterling-Rawdon to support the town after they won the Kraft Hockeyville competition. They were originally going to host a preseason game, but it got cancelled due to the lockout.

Matt Cooke says the owners knew all along that there'd be a work stoppage.

"It's been the owners' intent since day one," Cooke said. "They've made the decision to lock us out when that should be a last resort in negotiations." Penguins NHLPA representative Craig Adams described the situation as the players still being in "limbo." "My feeling really hasn't changed," Adams said. "Nothing's really changed. We haven't made any progress on the key issues." As of now, there are no further talks scheduled.

Matt Cooke shared his thoughts on the CBA negotiation process after working out with his Pittsburgh teammates on and off the ice on Wednesday.

Cooke shares a common thought among the players that a potential lockout won't be the same as the one that wiped out the entire 2004-05 campaign. He says the "players are united" and "that's something that's completely different than it was last time." The team's player rep, Craig Adams, believes that the two sides aren't as far apart as they were during the previous negotiation, but with talks stalled and training camps around the corner the NHL appears to be heading for a lockout at this point.
