The Columbus Blue Jackets have hired John Madden to the head coach of their AHL affiliate.
"John Madden has a winning pedigree, having been a part of three Stanley Cup championships and a collegiate national championship as a player and being a part of the coaching staff that helped the Florida Panthers become one of the NHL’s most improved clubs over the past three seasons," Columbus assistant GM Bill Zito said in a release. "He is a smart, energetic young coach who we believe to be the best person to lead our prospects in Cleveland." The Jackets were looking for a new AHL coach after Jared Bednar got the head coaching job in Colorado earlier this week. Aug 29 - 4:54 PM

Assistant coach John Madden has been fired by the Florida Panthers.

Madden served as an assistant coach with the Panthers for three seasons. He logged 898 games during his playing career and won the Stanley Cup in 2000, 2003, and 2010. The first two times were with the New Jersey Devils while his last championship was with Chicago.

The Florida Panthers plan to keep assistant coach John Madden.

That's despite the fact that they changed head coaches from Peter Horachek to Gerard Gallant. Brian Skrudland, another holdover from Horachek's staff, might also serve under Gallant.

John Madden will undergo nasal surgery after he collided with teammate Tomas Kopecky during the first period of Game 7 last Thursday.

He sustained lacerations under and above his right eye, which was also bruised badly, and required stitches in his nose. Despite all that he remained in the game and hopes to play again next year in the NHL, even if it isn't with the Florida Panthers. The soon to be 39-year-old center will be an unrestricted free agent this summer.

John Madden won just three of 12 faceoffs on Thursday.

Madden has won just 37.8% of his faceoffs in four playoff games. He was brought on primarily to provide a veteran presence and help defensively, so it really eats into his value when he does so poorly on the draw.

John Madden scored a goal in a 3-2 shootout victory.

Mikael Samuelsson netted a power-play goal at 17:15 of the first period. Tomas Fleischmann, Stephen Weiss, Ed Jovanovski, and Erik Gudbranson each assisted on one of Florida's two goals in regulation.

John Madden made a very favourable first impression with the Panthers' coaching staff in Friday night's loss to his former team, the Devils.

Panthers' assistant coach Gord Murphy praised Madden's leadership and conditioning after the contest. "He’s a veteran player who has won [Madden has three Stanley Cup championship rings]. You see his intelligence on the ice. He manages the game well and plays his position well. He looks like he’s in midseason form." That said, Madden has no fantasy value as he will toil on the Cats' third or fourth line.

John Madden logged 12:18 minutes in his Panthers debut on Friday.

We figure that will be about par for the course for Madden this season. He's a solid bottom-six forward, but he has no fantasy value in standard leagues.

John Madden will make his Panthers' debut on Friday against the New Jersey Devils.

There was some speculation that Madden, who was signed on Wednesday, will be sent to the minors on a conditioning stint. Instead, Madden will get a chance to play against the team he's played with for the first 10 seasons of his NHL career.

It's not clear what the Panthers' immediate plans are with John Madden.

Madden signed with Florida on Wednesday, but he was a healthy scratch Thursday. The Panthers probably wanted to give him more time to adjust to their system and shake off the rust after not playing all season. It's also worth noting that Florida already had Marcel Goc and Mikael Samuelsson returning on Thursday, so it would make sense if they wanted to spread out the returns and Madden's debut. That being said, Madden might still be in the press box on Friday and Panthers coach Kevin Dineen thinks it's possible that Madden might report to the AHL for a conditioning stint.
