Bryan Helmer has signed with the AHL Springfield Falcons.
Helmer had difficulty finding work in the AHL during the lockout, but now that it's coming to an end, it looks like he'll be able to extend his playing career. Helmer is 40 years old and the veteran of 146 NHL games. He'll be a nice addition to the Falcons, but their NHL affiliate, the Columbus Blue Jackets, aren't likely to call him up at any point during the shortened season. Jan 10 - 12:49 PM

Bryan Helmer is still an unrestricted free agent and looking for a team.

Helmer is 40 years old and played with the AHL Oklahoma City Barons last season. With the NHL locked out, dozens of the league's best players have signed with European clubs and about a hundred NHL-caliber youngsters have taken refuge in the AHL. That makes it hard for a guy like Helmer to find an opportunity to extend his career.

The Washington Capitals have recalled Bryan Helmer.

That was an awfully short stint in the minors. The Capitals sent him down because they thought Shaone Morrisonn might be able to play on Saturday. However, Morrisonn left Friday's practice early, so Helmer will stay in the NHL for a little bit longer.

"It's not everyday that you send down a No. 1 star," said coach Bruce Boudreau. Helmer was the first star in the Caps 3-2 win over Buffalo on Friday. Coach Boudreau won't show his cards, but this move likey means the return of Mike Green and/or Jeff Schultz.

Coyotes signed Bryan Helmer to a two-year contract on Wednesday.

The 34-year-old has not appeared in the NHL since 2003/04, when he suited up for 17 games with Phoenix, registering one point during that time. He is likely to play in the AHL again this season, so don't worry about him come draft day, even if he somehow makes the big club.
