The Dallas Stars have hired former NHL player and fitness guru Gary Roberts to serve as a player development consultant.
Roberts was quick to assure the clients of other clubs that he will still be available to train them during the summer. He will assist the Stars' younger players and prospects with training programs during the season and help them get on the right track for off-season conditioning as well. "He's just a good resource and he's going to share ideas and complement our training staff," said Dallas GM and long-time friend, Joe Nieuwendyk. "Plus, he'll go out on the road and talk to our kids, and that will be a big help." Wed, Oct 20, 2010 07:03:00 AM

Gary Roberts is expected to announce his retirement soon.

Roberts was not claimed by any NHL team when he was placed on waivers Tuesday. The 42-year-old veteran will finish his career with 438 goals and 910 points in 1,224 career NHL games. He played for Calgary, Carolina, Toronto, Florida, Pittsburgh and most recently Tampa Bay over the course of his 21-season long NHL career.

Gary Roberts didn't attend Tampa Bay's practice on Thursday.

Lightning GM Brian Lawton attempted to trade Roberts by the March 4th deadline but couldn't work anything out. Lawton also placed Roberts on waivers but no team claimed him. Roberts is taking some time to think about his immediate future. He may have played in his last NHL game.

The Tampa Bay Lightning have placed veteran Gary Roberts on waivers.

His first NHL squad, the Calgary Flames, are rumored to have interest. The veteran will likely be picked up by some playoff-bound team, but with his injury history and age, 42, he won't help much in fantasy circles.

Gary Roberts will likely be traded at the NHL trade deadline early next week and one destination could be his former stomping grounds in Calgary.

The gritty veteran began his career in 1986 with the Flames before being forced to retire in 1996 due to a neck injury. Roberts said he will call it a career for good this time at the end of this season. "This will be my last retirement," he said. "When this season's over, it will be it for me. The game's been great to me, and I'm grateful to be playing still. I'm going to enjoy the last days as much as I can."

Gary Roberts didn't play on Thursday.

Roberts was given the day off for "maintenance." He is expected to play in Tampa Bay's game against Carolina on Friday.

Gary Roberts has two goals in three games since returning from an elbow injury.

Roberts is playing like a kid again - perhaps because he is playing alongside two of them in Steven Stamkos and Steve Downie, whose combined age is two years less than Roberts' 42 years-of-age. Pick him up while he's hot, but don't expect the oft-injured forward to remain healthy for long - it's just not possible.

Gary Roberts scored the only goal for Tampa Bay in the 3-1 loss to the Thrashers on Tuesday night.

Tampa Bay actually lead this game 1-0 but despite 41 shots on net, they couldn't beat Kari Lehtonen more than once.

Gary Roberts scored his third goal of the season as the Lightning blanked the Islanders 1-0 on Saturday night.

Roberts has been a huge disappointment this season as he only has four points in 21 games this season. I'm pretty sure that's not what the Lightning had in mind when signing him to a free-agent contract last off-season. Roberts is well past his prime, which means he won't garner enough fantasy value to be owned for fantasy pools this season. Steve Eminger and Steve Stamkos assisted on Robert's goal in tonight's shut out victory.

Gary Roberts returned to action on Wednesday.

The veteran forward was held pointless with a -2 rating in 13:19 of ice time.

Gary Roberts will return to the lineup Wednesday after missing 30 games with an elbow injury.

The veteran forward has only two goals and one assist in 19 games this season and isn't even worth a sniff in any fantasy league - except ones that reward games missed due to injury.

Gary Roberts was on the ice Friday.

Roberts has been sidelined for 25 games due to an elbow injury. There's still no timetable for his return, but Roberts is hopeful that he can play again this season.

Gary Roberts is still a few weeks away from returning to the lineup.

The veteran has been sidelined since late November with an elbow injury. He hopes to come back and finish the season, and his career, on a high and healthy note. With his propensity for injury, we're not sure that's possible. We wish him the best though. Just don't keep him on your fantasy squad.

Gary Roberts will retire at the end of the season.

Roberts announced his decision during Thursday's morning skate. "I don't think there's any doubt, I'm gone after this season," Roberts said. "I'm going to retire. I'd like to finish on a god note. I'd like to come back and prove I can play and hopefully stay healthy enough to finish the season and finish playing a stretch of games and at least have some success. I'd like to finish on a high note." Roberts has missed 11 of Tampa Bay's past 12 games due to an elbow injury. Roberts has scored 436 goals and 906 points in 1,213 games over 21 seasons in his career.
