Brent Sopel is hoping to return to the NHL this season.

Sopel has spent the last three years in the KHL. The 37-year-old last played in the NHL with the Montreal Canadiens in 2010-11. He can safely be ignored in all fantasy leagues.

Although Brent Sopel was coming off of a three-year/$7 million deal, he would have accepted a salary at the league minimum to stay in the NHL.

Unfortunately for Sopel, no NHL team appeared particularly interested in his services, so he ended up signing a two-year deal with Metallurg Novokuznetsk of the KHL. He had seven points and 152 blocked shots in 71 games last season.

Brent Sopel has agreed to a two-year deal with the KHL Metallurg Novokuznetsk.

Brent Sopel isn't projected to be retained by the Montreal Canadiens this summer.

That would make the 34-year-old blueliner an unrestricted free agent on July 1. In 71 games with the Canadiens and Atlanta Thrashers during the 2010-11 campaign, Sopel posted seven points and a plus-6 rating. It is being speculated that Montreal will allow Paul Mara and Alexandre Picard to walk away as well. Stay tuned to see what happens.

Brent Sopel will practice with his new Canadien teammates Saturday morning and play Saturday night against the Hurricanes.

Sopel's expert shot blocking skills were much needed in Montreal. Unfortunately, shot blocking isn't a fantasy category so Sopel has no value to those in hockey pools.

The Atlanta Thrashers have traded Brent Sopel and Nigel Dawes to the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for Ben Maxwell and a fourth round draft pick.

The Canadiens were in need of some depth on the back end with Andrei Markov and Josh Gorges out for the remainder of the year with knee injuries. Jaroslav Spacek is also ailing with a lower-body ailment. Sopel is a dependable shot-blocking blueliner that is great on the penalty kill, but his fantasy value is very limited.

Brent Sopel was absent from practice on Wednesday due to a traveling delay.

The Thrashers' defenseman spent the team's day off with his family in Chicago and ended up getting caught up there. Sopel has five points and a plus-10 rating in 44 games with Atlanta this season.

Brent Sopel will be patrolling the blueline in Atlanta next season after the Thrashers and Blackhawks hooked up in a roster-altering deal on Thursday morning.

Sopel was leaned on heavily during Chicago's Stanley Cup run, especially on the penalty kill where he proved to be an excellent shot blocker. His fantasy value is very limited though, as he recorded a mere eight points and a plus-3 rating in 73 games during the regular season.
