Brian Willsie suffered a first period knee injury on Thursday and did not return.

Willsie was hit by the Predators Jordin Tootoo. "(Tootoo) was going straight at him," coach Tony Granato said. "I couldn't see or tell if he stuck his knee out, but I know (Willsie) tried to cut one way. It happened quick, and there was no penalty called on it. Any time you go knee on knee, it's going to be a dangerous hit, and he took the worst of it." Willsie will miss at least Friday's game against Dallas. Consider him day-to-day for now. He has little fantasy value when healthy.

Brian Willsie is doing everything he can to impress the Colorado brass this pre-season.

The veteran of seven NHL seasons signed a one-year deal with the Avalanche this summer after spending the previous two campaigns in Los Angeles. He has netted two goals in exhibition games thus far, while trying to earn a spot on the team's opening day roster. "He's solid in all areas of the game, and we're real lucky to have him in our organization," coach Tony Granato said. "He's in that group of guys competing for spots and roles. He's a reliable veteran player and tremendous human being. Anybody who's been around him, either playing with him or coaching him, knows what kind of character guy he is."

The Avalanche have signed winger Brian Willsie to a one-year deal.

Financial terms of the deal were not released. Willsie collected four goals and 12 points in 53 games with the Kings last year. The winger did collect 19 goals and 41 points with the Caps three seasons ago and could return to those levels if he plays on the right line in Colorado. Realistically, he will notch 10-12 goals and 30 points if he plays a full season.
