Steve McCarthy was not a happy member of the Vancouver Canucks during the 2005-06 season.
McCarthy is now playing in nearby Abbotsford for Calgary's AHL farm team and he admits that he was immature at the time when he bashed the Vancouver organization and asked for a trade. "I didn’t," said McCarthy as to whether he handled himself well seven years ago. "I think things got blown out of proportion. That wasn’t anybody but myself. I struggled and got down and you worry about things you can’t control. It seemed to snowball and a lot of it was immaturity and not knowing how to handle certain situations. The harder I was on myself, the worse things went and it seemed like I couldn’t get away from it. Whether it was at the rink or on TV, your family and friends want to know what’s going on and when you play in a market like that, that [scrutiny] is what you expect." After spending time in Europe, McCarthy, at the age of 31, is looking to crack the Flames lineup when the lockout ends. Mon, Oct 22, 2012 07:55:00 AM

Steve McCarthy will start the season in the AHL during the lockout.

Abbotsford Heat general manager Jay Feaster announced Sunday that McCarthy has been signed and will begin the American Hockey League season in Abbotsford. McCarthy has a real chance to hook up with the Flames when the lockout is over as he has a big fan in the new head coach, Bob Hartley.

The Calgary Flames have given former first rounder Steve McCarthy a professional tryout with their AHL farm team, the Abbotsford Heat.

Newly appointed Calgary head coach Bob Hartley had McCarthy as his top defenseman in Switzerland last season and previously in Atlanta, and could not believe that the 31-year-old was not given a new contract by Zurich. "I know what he did for us in Atlanta, and I know what he did for us in Zurich last year," says Hartley. "I still can’t figure out why he was not in the Swiss league. For me, he was the best defenceman in that entire league last year. I don’t know. Maybe he was the best-kept secret." McCarthy has a real chance to hook up with the Flames when the lockout is over as he has a big fan in the new head coach.

Despite the fact newly-signed Steve McCarthy has a history with the Thrashers, he will likely not play in Atlanta this season.

There would have to be a series of serious injuries on the Thrashers' blueline for McCarthy to get the call. The veteran defenseman played 55 games with the Thrashers in 2007-08 registering six assists and a terrible minus 23 rating.

The Thrashers acquired Steve McCarthy on Thursday.

The deal was for future considerations. McCarthy cleared waivers earlier in the week. He will simply be a depth defender for Atlanta and will play with their minor league affiliate this season.

Steve McCarthy cleared waivers on Wednesday.

McCarthy was signed as a depth defenseman in July. The Ducks have yet to decide whether they will keep him, send him to the minors or just release him. He is not worth drafting as he is the Ducks eighth defenseman at best.

Steve McCarthy has been placed on waivers by the Ducks.

McCarthy obviously failed to impress the Ducks' brass at camp as he was just signed by the club back in July. His future in the league could enter a stage of limbo if he goes unclaimed. We'd stay away from drafting him.

Steve McCarthy is the top candidate for the sixth defenseman's spot on the Ducks according to GM Bob Murray.

"He gives us great depth," Murray said. "He's coming up from Europe; he's had a couple big injuries. Another guy with another big opportunity, playing on a Scott Niedermayer-led team. OK, it's time to step up." The Ducks have Scott Niedermayer, Ryan Whitney and James Wisniewski as their top three blueliners with Luca Sbisa and Nick Boynton slated to be the fourth and fifth rearguards. McCarthy has been a big disappointment since being drafted in the first round in 1999. At age 28, this could be his last chance in the NHL. He has very little fantasy value, if any, as a sixth defenseman, at this time.

Steve McCarthy has agreed to a two-way contract with the Anaheim Ducks.

McCarthy will earn $575k if he plays in the NHL. He's a depth defenseman who has no fantasy value at this time.

Steve McCarthy has the worst +/- rating among all NHL defensemen at -24.

This has been an awful season for the veteran defender. He found himself on the top power-play last season, which led to a few productive outings, but he is now, simply, a bad fantasy defender as he has zero goals and only five assists. It is also clear that going forward, Tobias Enstrom is the top dog on Atlanta's blueline.

Steve McCarthy will likely replace the injured Ilya Kovalchuk on the power-play.

Kovalchuk plays the point with the man-advantage and is the trigger man. The Thrashers will likely have a different primary target, likely Marian Hossa down low, but McCarthy will be a decent secondary option.

Steve McCarthy returned to action on Wednesday January 30.

McCarthy has been sidelined since early January with a strained ribcage. He played 10:48 but added a power-play assist and racked up 17 PIMs coming to the aid of teammate Ilya Kovalchuk.

Steve McCarthy missed Sunday's game with a rib injury.

The defender is listed as day-to-day. He should not be on your fantasy roster anyway.

Steve McCarthy may be turning his horrendous season around with two assists on Wednesday.

McCarthy now has three points on the season - all assists - but he was a league worst -19 prior to Wednesday's game against the Lightning. He finished with a +3 rating to tie him at -16 with Brad Richards of the Tampa Bay Lightning. He should not be on your fantasy squad.
Thu, Dec 20, 2007 10:29:00 AM

Steve McCarthy is an NHL worst minus nineteen.

McCarthy was minus two on Saturday to increase his lead in a category that he wants no part of. McCarthy was the quarterback of the Thrashers power play at the beginning of the 2006/07 season, but is nowhere close to that spot now with Atlanta using rookie Tobias Enstrom in that role. McCarthy has absolutely no fantasy value at this time.
