Jim Edmonds has ended his comeback bid and will officially retire from baseball.
The Cardinals gave Edmonds a minor league contract and an invitation to spring training earlier this month, but he's still having problems with his surgically-repaired Achilles tendon and has now decided to shut it down. He will not be attempting a comeback. Edmonds, 40, will finish with 393 career homers and 1,949 career hits.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch's Joe Strauss reports that Jim Edmonds' (Achilles) status is "becoming less and less clear."
Edmonds has yet to take a physical for the Cardinals despite having surgery a month ago, and even manager Tony La Russa has admitted that there's uncertainty surrounding the 40-year-old, saying the last time he talked to him, Edmonds was "hobbled." The veteran's return to St. Louis for a shot at 400 home runs and 2,000 hits would be a nice little story, but it's looking possible that it might not happen. The team is hoping they can get Edmonds in for a physical sometime this week.

The Cardinals have yet to schedule a physical for Jim Edmonds but hope he can pass it sometime next week.
GM John Mozeliak said the agreement they had with Edmonds was "open-ended" in order to allow him time to recover from foot surgery that he had last month. The team basically took Edmonds at his word that he's healthy, but the 40-year-old will still need to pass a physical in order to officially join the team. He's hoping to win a bench spot in spring training.

St. Louis Post-Dispatch
It's been revealed that Jim Edmonds had surgery last month to repair an Achilles tendon injury that had been giving him severe pain in his left foot.
Edmonds' availability down the stretch last season was limited due to the injury, and he eventually shut it down late in the year. The Cardinals signed him to a minor league deal Friday but admitted they're not sure where he is physically and are by no means guaranteeing him a roster spot. He still must pass a physical. "There is still some uncertainty about where he is physically," GM John Mozeliak said. "I'm not writing him in any way yet. It's an opportunity. It's still too early to tell if everything is perfect or not. He's certainly optimistic."

Cardinals transferred LHP Jaime Garcia from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list.

Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said that Chris Carpenter felt some back stiffness during a long bullpen session Sunday.
It's not clear if Carpenter will have to scale back his throwing program, but he'll likely need a few more bullpen sessions before the Cardinals think about the possibility of a rehab assignment. While it once looked like the veteran right-hander could return in late June, sometime during the second half appears more realistic at this point.

John Gast
D.L.
John Gast has been diagnosed with a strained left lat.
The Cardinals were encouraged by the diagnosis. "The timetable is to be determined, but the good news is that it's not the shoulder or the elbow," general manager John Mozeliak said. "Hopefully, it's something that won't take too long. With a lat, it can be up to a month or a month and a half. We'll see." Michael Wacha is taking Gast's spot in the rotation.

Fernando Salas (shoulder) will begin a minor league rehab assignment this week with Triple-A Memphis.
Salas has been sidelined for nearly a month due to right shoulder irritation. The Cardinals will likely want to see how he responds to throwing on back-to-back days before bringing him back from the disabled list.

Cardinals transferred RHP Jason Motte from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list.
The move is being made in order to clear space on the 40-man roster for John Gast, who will be called up to start Tuesday. Motte is out for the year following Tommy John surgery.
