Gregg Zaun has retired from baseball.
"The stamina just isn't there," Zaun told MLB.com's Corey Brock on Monday morning. "The arm strength came back but it wouldn't last. After three innings yesterday, I was totally gassed. The amount of time for me to get ready to play at a high level... it just saps the fun out of it." The 39-year-old catcher will retire with a .252/.344/.388 career batting line and 878 career hits.

Sportsnet expects Gregg Zaun to announce his retirement on Monday.
This news is somewhat surprising, as Zaun has been recovering nicely from shoulder surgery while pursuing the Padres' back-up catcher's job. He has been a serviceable performer for most of his career, compiling a .252/.344/.388 batting line and 88 home runs in 4,042 plate appearances.

Gregg Zaun (shoulder) is aiming to play in a spring game within the next 10 days.
Zaun had a successful throwing session Monday and is making swift progress in his recovery from surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder. The veteran inked a minor league contract with the Padres in January and is likely to serve as Nick Hundley's backup this season.

Gregg Zaun said that his surgically-repaired shoulder felt "great" in his first full day of camp Tuesday.
Zaun considered retirement after undergoing surgery to repair a torn labrum last June, but signed a minor league deal with the Padres last month. "I've got a lot of work ahead of me in the next month," said Zaun. "The last thing I want to worry about is babysitting. I'm not trying to be selfish, but I've got a lot on my plate right now. I have to worry about keeping my arm healthy and getting my shoulder ready." The veteran backstop still has to prove he's healthy, but he projects to be the backup catcher to Nick Hundley this season. He batted .265/.350/.392 with two home runs and 14 RBI over 117 plate appearances with the Brewers last season.

Suspended
Yasmani Grandal will begin a minor league rehab assignment Saturday with Triple-A Tucson.
Grandal is still serving his 50-game suspension for a positive PED test, but he is allowed to begin a 10-game minor league assignment. The 24-year-old backstop is eligible to join the Padres on May 28 and may split playing time with Nick Hundley upon his return.

Logan Forsythe (foot) will begin playing in extended spring training games on Friday.
Forsythe has been taking batting practice for a week with no issues and is ready to take the next step. He's been out all season with plantar fasciitis in his right foot, so he'll need plenty of rehab at-bats before returning.

Cameron Maybin (wrist) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Tucson on Friday.
The Padres want Maybin to get around 30 rehab at-bats, so he should return sometime next week. The outfielder has been sidelined since mid-April with a nagging right wrist ailment.

Clayton Richard (illness) gave up two runs in six innings Tuesday in his second minor league rehab start with Triple-A Tucson.
Richard, out since May 4 with an intestinal virus, gave up five hits and no walks while striking out four. The southpaw threw 65 out of 94 pitches for strikes. It should be enough for the Padres to activate him from the disabled list.

D.L.
Cory Luebke (elbow) has had his throwing program stopped for the second time this year in his attempt to return from Tommy John surgery.
Luebke was shut down in early March before resuming sessions of catch on April 1, and he had progressed to throwing off a mound before this latest setback. Obviously none of this bodes well for his mission to return to live major league games by the All-Star break.
May 18
7
Joe Wieland
D.L.
Joe Wieland (elbow) threw a bullpen session Friday at the Padres' spring training complex.
Wieland, currently on the 60-day disabled list, is nine months removed from Tommy John surgery and will continued to be moved along slowly. If he can avoid setbacks, Wieland should be game-ready sometime after the All-Star break.

Casey Kelly
D.L.
Padres placed LHP Casey Kelly on the 60-day disabled list with a left elbow injury.
Kelly will undergo Tommy John surgery during the first week of April. Obviously, he won't be making any contribution this season.
