Jon Heyman of CBS Sports reports that Edgar Renteria has turned down two contracts and is still leaning toward retirement.
Renteria was offered minor league deals from two National League clubs over the winter and turned them down, though we aren't sure if those are the offers Heyman is alluding to. The 35-year-old has not filed retirement papers because he remains open to resuming his career if the right opportunity comes along; Heyman mentions the Brewers as a possibility. The five-time All-Star and two-time Gold Glove winner owns a .286/.343/.398 career batting line over 16 major league seasons to go along with 2,327 hits.

CBSSports.com's Jon Heyman confirms Edgar Renteria intends to return for his 17th major league season.
Renteria was active for just 96 games this past season and will likely settle for a non-guaranteed contract as a backup infielder. According to Heyman, the Astros, Cubs and Brewers are among the teams that could be interested.

Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com reports that the Royals met with Edgar Renteria's agent during the Winter Meetings.
The Royals are currently looking for a backup infielder and are said to be considering multiple options. Renteria, 35, batted .251/.306/.348 with five home runs, 36 RBI and a .654 OPS over 333 plate appearances with the Reds this past season. He may have to settle for a minor league deal.

Scott Rolen (shoulder) isn't sure when he'll resume swinging a bat.
Rolen went on the disabled list on May 12 with a sore left shoulder and recently received a cortisone shot. He has felt some improvement over the past couple of days, but he is currently shut down from all baseball activities and has no plans to rush back. "Ideally, this will be the last time (I’m on the DL)," said Rolen. "If it takes a few extra days, we’ll do that." Todd Frazier will continue to fill in at the hot corner and makes for a decent play in deeper mixed leagues.

Nick Masset (shoulder) threw from a distance of 60 feet again on Friday.
"He was much better than yesterday," said Reds trainer Paul Lessard. "I thought he would be. He was so mechanical the first day." While it's a good sign that Masset is throwing again, he'll need to build arm strength before being cleared to get back on the mound.

Bill Bray underwent an MRI on his back which showed no structural damage.
Bray was placed on the disabled list last month with a groin injury, but his back is the bigger issue now. He was put on anti-inflammatory medication and the hope is that he'll be ready to resume throwing Monday.

Ryan Madson's rehab from Tommy John surgery began Tuesday.
"It’s Day One of rehab," Madson said. "It’s the first day I’ve been out of my brace. It feels good." Madson, of course, will miss all of the 2012 season, but he's hoping to be ready for the start of 2013. He'll be a free agent this winter
