Darin Erstad told the Jamestown Sun that he has decided to retire.
"I’m done," said Erstad, who turned 36 years old earlier this month. "I had my time. I always said, ‘When I’m done, I’m done.’ ... I’m good." Erstad sought out a job this winter, and even drew interest from the Marlins, among other teams, however he was unable to land a gig. The two-time All-Star and three-time AL Gold Glove winner hangs it up with a .282 lifetime batting average to go along with 1,697 career hits over 14 major league seasons.

Darin Erstad is still hoping to land a job before spring training.
Erstad had an ugly .194/.268/.328 batting line last year and turns 36 this June. "There is nowhere to find at-bats," Erstad said in an email to ESPN.com. "I have a hard time justifying leaving my family for seven or eight days and getting three pinch-hit ABs. I have had an open mind all winter and continue to have that. I am at peace with whatever happens."

Darin Erstad (back) returned to action for the Astros on Sunday as a pinch-hitter.
He grounded out to first in his lone place appearance. Erstad may be healthy enough to get back into the lineup this week, but he's still not a fantasy option.

Darin Erstad (back) was available for pinch-hitting duties Saturday and could return to the starting lineup Sunday.
Erstad has been sidelined since September 12 with discomfort related to ongoing back spasms. "Better," he said Saturday afternoon when asked about his progress. "It's coming." The impending free agent is batting .208/.281/.347 this season with two homers and 11 RBI in 124 at-bats.

Justin Maxwell (hand) hit 15 balls off a tee and took 30 soft-tosses on Monday.
Maxwell is no longer wearing a brace on his fractured left hand and is progressing steadily. He's scheduled to have a routine X-ray on Tuesday to see how the healing is coming along. The outfielder should make a late May/early June return if all goes well.

Bud Norris held the Royals scoreless through six innings but took a no-decision as the Astros lost on Tuesday.
Norris left with a 3-0 lead, but the bullpen proceeded to allow seven runs in the next three innings to rob him of a win. He has a 3.86 ERA this year, but he's struck out just 35 batters through 56 innings and is likely due for some regression. His next start will come Monday against the Rockies.

Josh Fields (forearm) will begin a minor league rehab assignment Friday with High-A Quad Cities.
Fields is scheduled to throw two innings. The Rule 5 pick appeared in two games with the Astros in early April prior to being placed on the disabled list. If all goes well, he could return to the big club sometime this month.

Paul Clemens left Monday's appearance with a right pinkie injury.
Clemens was struck by a comebacker and appeared to dislocate the finger, but the Astros' trainer popped it back in place and he stayed in to face one more batter. The club reconsidered after that, though, and decided to remove him. Clemens saved the bullpen with 5 1/3 scoreless relief frames after Erik Bedard lasted only 1/3 of an inning.

Alex White will undergo Tommy John surgery.
White showed diminished velocity this spring and was diagnosed with a strained pitching elbow, but the injury turned out to be worse than that. The young right-hander will obviously miss all of 2013 and might not be ready for the start of 2014.
