Juan Pierre went 2-for-3 with a double and his sixth stolen base in Wednesday's win over the Cubs.
The two-hit night was Pierre's sixth in 14 May games, and leaves him with a highly surprising .340/.387/.379 triple slash through his first 112 plate appearances. He'll need to start stealing bases with greater frequency to hold his 10-12 team mixed-league value, however.

Juan Pierre went 2-for-5 in Wednesday's loss to the Mets.
Both hits were singles for Pierre, who is now batting .345/.400/.368 and has had multi-hit nights in four of his past six games. Pierre has been a pleasant surprise for the Phightins' floundering offense, but with just five steals, he's offering fantasy owners little other than average. He's a fringe option in 10-12 team mixed leagues.

Juan Pierre went 2-for-3 with a triple and a walk Thursday against the Padres.
Pierre didn't have an extra-base hit or a walk this season before collecting one of each tonight. The Phillies haven't gotten much from John Mayberry Jr. or Laynce Nix thus far, so it looks like Pierre will keep getting the nod in left field.

Juan Pierre is batting .292/.292/.292 through his first 24 plate appearances this season.
A bizarre batting line, but one which sums him up pretty well. While Pierre figures to hit for a decent batting average, he doesn't walk much and won't hit for any power. It's true that he'll accumulate some stolen bases, but he has a lousy 62 percent success rate (29-for-47 in stolen base attempts) since the start of last season. There's some value here in NL-only leagues, but he is more likely to hurt at the top of the Phillies' lineup than help.

Howard hasn't done much recently while recovering from an infection near his surgically-repaired left Achilles tendon, so it's good to see him making some progress. The Phillies haven't put a timetable on his return, but reports have indicated that he could be back sometime in June. He'll require a rehab assignment first.

Thome has been sidelined for nearly a month now with a lower back strain. It's not clear when he'll be ready for an official minor league rehab assignment.

Phillies manager Charlie Manuel was "encouraged" with what he saw from Chase Utley (knee) Thursday, when the second baseman took batting and infield practice.
"I was encouraged with the way the ball was jumping off his bat and how nice he was swinging," Manuel said. "And any time he goes out and takes ground balls, I get encouraged by that." While it's good that Utley looks like himself in the cage, the fielding is what's still giving his knee trouble, and Bob Brookover of the Philadelphia Inquirer notes that Utley's work in the field Thursday was "limited," as he took "fewer than 10 ground balls." It's still unclear when he'll be ready to start a rehab assignment.

The move clears a spot on the 40-man roster for Mike Fontenot. Martinez has been on the disabled list all season after breaking a bone in his right foot during spring training.

According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, the recovery timetable for Laynce Nix (calf) is a matter of weeks, not days.
Nix was diagnosed with a Grade 2 left calf strain on May 10, and was just recently cleared to begin exercises. "It's going to be longer than the 15 days," Nix said. "It's a pretty good tear. It's unfortunate." Nix is out indefinitely and remains without a timetable.

Worley visited Dr. James Andrews earlier this week, who confirmed the Phillies' diagnosis of a bone chip and inflammation in his elbow. The 24-year-old right-hander may require offseason surgery, but he'll try to pitch through the condition for now. He's slated to play catch again Friday and will slowly ramp up his throwing program from there.

Stutes has been sidelined since April 22 with right shoulder soreness. If he does receive clearance, he'll need a few bullpen sessions before going out on a rehab assignment.

Phillies placed RHP David Herndon on the 15-day disabled list with a flexor pronator strain in his right elbow.
He'll be shut down for three weeks but is not a candidate for surgery right now. Herndon gave up two runs in two innings during his most recent appearance Sunday and owns a 4.70 ERA and 8/1 K/BB ratio over 7 2/3 innings this season. The Phillies will make a corresponding roster move Tuesday.
