Former major leaguer Ryan Freel was suffering from chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) when he committed suicide last year.
Freel committed suicide on Dec. 22, 2012 as a 36-year-old. CTE, an incurable disease, is often found in the brains of athletes that play contact sports. Freel, who played eight years in the bigs and retired in 2010, suffered nine or 10 concussions during his career, according to the report. Football players Dave Duerson, Junior Seau and Mike Webster, and hockey player Derek Boogaard have also been diagnosed with the disease. Former NFL star Tony Dorsett recently announced that he was diagnosed with CTE. Tue, Dec 17, 2013 10:27:00 AM
