Oliver Perez pitched a scoreless ninth in a 3-2 game for his first career save Friday against the A's.
Perez was manager Eric Wedge's choice for the ninth even though the A's had two righties up to start the inning. But there may have been a little strategy there, too; had Wedge gone to righty Carter Capps instead, Brandon Moss and John Jaso likely would have entered as pinch-hitters. Since Perez got the job done, allowing just a soft single in the process, consider him the short-term favorite for saves in Seattle's pen. Tom Wilhelmsen still figures to get a chance to reclaim the job within the next 7-14 days.
Jun 15 - 1:15 AM
Oliver Perez took the loss in Saturday's game against the Indians after he allowed a run on two hits and a walk without recording an out.
Perez had been lights out prior to last night and this is the first update we've done on him in 2013. Such is life as a middle reliever. Those of us that snickered when Seattle signed Ollie in 2012 -- each and every one of us, in other words -- have been silenced. The formerly maligned left-hander from Mexico put up a 2.12 ERA in 2012 and currently sits at 1.62 in 2013. After years spent as an overpaid source of angst for Mets fans, Perez has proved a great bargain in the Northwest.
May 19 - 4:00 AM
Mariners re-signed LHP Oliver Perez to a one-year, $1.5 million contract.
The deal also includes up to $600,000 in performance-based incentives. The 31-year-old left-hander was a pleasant surprise for the Mariners in 2012, posting a 2.12 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 24/10 K/BB ratio over 29 2/3 innings.
Sat, Nov 3, 2012 10:07:00 PM
Mariners purchased the contract of LHP Oliver Perez from Triple-A Tacoma.
Welcome back to the show, Ollie! He hasn't appeared in a big league game since going 0-5 with a 6.80 ERA for the Mets in 2010. And he's struggled in a relief role at Triple-A this year, with a 4.65 ERA over 22 appearances. The Mariners aren't likely to trust him in high-leverage situations.

Michael Morse is not in the Mariners' lineup Tuesday due to his nagging right quad injury.
Morse originally suffered the injury in late May, and he's been unable to totally shake it. The M's have admitted that they would have placed him on the DL earlier had they not been dealing with other injuries, and they're probably wishing they would have gone ahead and done it, anyway. Morse was out testing the quad prior to Tuesday's game and is hoping to be back in the lineup soon.

Franklin Gutierrez (hamstring) went 1-for-5 in his first rehab game Wednesday at Triple-A Tacoma.
Gutierrez was on a minor league rehab assignment earlier this month but had to be pulled off it suddenly after experiencing lingering issues with his legs. He rested for about two weeks and is now ready to test himself again. The hope is that Gutierrez will be ready to rejoin the Mariners' active roster within the next 7-10 days.

Jason Bay is nursing a sore hamstring.
Bay normally would have started Monday against Angels lefty Jason Vargas, but he felt his hamstring tighten up during Sunday's game. "He got a little knot in there," Mariners manager Eric Wedge said. "We got him out here early and tried to have him run a little bit, but we talked about it and felt we'd be putting him in harm's way." Bay is considered day-to-day.

Mariners transferred RHP Stephen Pryor from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list.

Josh Kinney (shoulder, ribs) will begin a minor league rehab assignment Monday with Triple-A Tacoma.
Kinney has yet to pitch for the Mariners this season due to a stress reaction on the left side of his rib cage. The 34-year-old made one rehab appearance with Triple-A Tacoma back on May 17, but then had to be shut down again. The Mariners are surely hoping that the additional rest will pay off.
