Eric Young Jr. doubled and homered Tuesday as the Rockies beat the Cubs.
The home run, Young's first, drove in two runs and he also scored twice on the night. The outfielder has been seeing everyday at-bats with Michael Cuddyer on the disabled list, and manager Walt Weiss has used him primarily as the team's leadoff hitter. He won't be a source of much power, but he's got speed to burn and the Rockies can mash behind him. There are worse options for stolen bases.

Eric Young Jr. went 3-for-5 with a triple, two RBI and a steal as the Rockies beat the Mets 8-4 in the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader.
Young got the start in center with Dexter Fowler hobbled and made the most of it. The speedster had been 0-for-2 stealing bases this year before swiping third today. And one can't blame John Buck for that one; the Mets infield was shifted over with Carlos Gonzalez up and David Wright didn't even try to cover third base on the play.

Rockies manager Walt Weiss announced Friday that he envisions Eric Young Jr. as a super-utility player for the Rockies in 2013.
Weiss has publicly stated that he wants his team to be more versatile and more aggressive on the bases, and Young certainly fits both of those molds. He'll likely see time at second base, third base and in the outfield, and should accumulate enough at-bats to swipe at least 20 bases, making him relevant in most deep mixed leagues.

Eric Young Jr. (oblique) has resumed some baseball activities, but he will not be healthy enough to return before the end of the season.
Young will skip winter ball this offseason, as well. His oblique strain came at a bad time, as he had been playing every day and was doing quite well. The 27-year-old will be back with the Rockies in 2013, most likely as a bench player.

Jeff Francis (groin) threw a 25-pitch bullpen session on Friday.
He'll now progress to an outing in extended spring training before he's re-evaluated. Even when he is cleared to return, his rotation spot may not be secure after posting a 6.00 ERA, 1.58 WHIP and 31/14 K/BB ratio through his first eight starts. He shouldn't be a consideration in most fantasy leagues.

Edwar Cabrera (left shoulder impingement) threw a 45-pitch bullpen session last month.
We've read nothing further regarding Cabrera, which probably means he isn't close to a rehab assignment. The 25-year-old lefty was placed on the 60-day disabled list in February. He's eligible for activation, but not healthy enough to pitch. Cabrera ranked as Colorado's ninth best prospect by MLB.com this offseason.

Rafael Betancourt (groin) will throw a bullpen session to determine whether he'll be available for Friday night's contest against the Giants.
Initially, it was feared that Betancourt would be headed for the disabled list after leaving Tuesday's game with a tight right groin, but he has made significant improvement in recent days. Even if he's unable to return on Friday, Betancourt should be available at some point over the weekend.
