Jason Hammel failed to come through when it mattered most, surrendering five runs on four hits over just 1 1/3 innings in Wednesday's 8-3 Game 4 NLCS loss to the Mets.
The Mets move on to the World Series while Hammel and the Cubs are left to consider what went wrong in the NLCS. The 33-year-old right-hander opened Wednesday's deciding game by allowing a single to Curtis Granderson. He then recorded two outs (including a foul-out by Daniel Murphy!) before the contest collapsed on him. And collapse it did. Granderson stole second and Hammel walked Yoenis Cespedes, at which point Lucas Duda launched a three-run home run. At which point, Travis d'Arnaud followed with a solo home run. When the dust settled, four runs had scored in the frame. Hammel was pulled with one out in the second inning after he issued a walk. That run would also score as Duda came through with a two-run double. It's a bitter end to a 2015 campaign that saw Hammel post a 3.74 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 170/40 K/BB ratio across 170 2/3 innings.
